It was always something. If the bulkheads weren't collapsing, it was a
distress call. And if everything outside Coro quieted down, there were
always a few personnel matters demanding a Captain's attention.
"What can I do for you, Jarod?" asked the Captain. The two officers were in
the Ready Room. The Captain was in a relaxed mood. The ship had just
completed her work at Starbase 81 and was even now rushing back toward the
Wormwood system with a full load of supplies, ordnance, and equipment for
Task Group 5.4. Lt. Commander Dejat had come back aboard looking very
pleased with himself and immediately headed down to the lower shuttlebay to
oversee onloading and unpacking of a large load of... something. A couple
of new officers had come aboard and were settling in. The Captain took a
sip of his coffee. If it weren't for the personnel problems, he could have
quietly relaxed and meditated all the way back to Wormwood.
"Well, sir, it's about Lieutenant Oswald," Bentall continued, breaking Lora
Kor's reverie. "I am growing increasingly dissatisfied with her performance
as a senior officer of this crew and would like your input on it."
"How so?" the Captain asked.
Bentall looked troubled. "To be blunt, sir, she appears to be deliberately
going out of her way to be rude and disrespectful to me. I have heard her
make accusatory remarks about myself to her staff and every report I get
from her is full of so much unnecessary stuff that it takes me twice as long
to go through them then any other department head."
The Captain nodded thoughtfully and took another sip of coffee. "I assume
you've talked to her about it?" he asked.
"Aye, I have. As a matter of fact I have tried to get her to understand the
necessities of following standard procedures. She doesn't seem to
understand what I'm driving at, so I am going to be taking her through the
Academy Protocol course over the next few weeks in the holodeck." Bentall
paused to take a breath. "If that doesn't work, I'm going to recommend she
be temporarily demoted back to Ensign and put on probation for a month."
Lora Kor frowned. "Isn't that a bit harsh, Exec? She and her team did do
an outstanding job on the Antarax and the Sutherland."
"I agree. When she's working on engineering disciplines, she does an
outstanding job. She just doesn't seem to be willing to properly do the
paperwork that goes with it." Bentall paused, frowning. "She's easily the
youngest of the senior officers. It might just be simple immaturity."
Lora Kor nodded. "Perhaps. I'll tell you what. Instruct the Lieutenant to
come up at 1400; let her know I'd like to talk to her informally. Maybe I
can get to the root of this."
Bentall smiled. "Very good, sir." He started to leave, but the Captain
called him back, tossing over a PADD.
"Exec, I just received this rather unusual confession from Chief Tlaloco.
Would you let him know that since I was the one that ordered him to see what
he could do for Daren, that I'm not going to make an issue of whether or not
he's allowed to practice medicine?" The Captain's smile was a wry one;
count on Starfleet to restrict his practicality possibly at the risk of
someone's life. "After all," the Captain continued, "I can hardly place
myself in the stockade for giving him such an order, can I?"
The XO looked amused. "I would hope not, sir." He held up the PADD. "I'll
tell him," he said. "Anything else?"
The Captain shook his head. "Thank you, Exec, that'll be all." Just then,
the Captain's communicator chirped. "Lora Kor here," he said, tapping it.
"Captain," Dalton said over the comm circuit. "This is Mr. Dalton. Could
you join me in your wardroom for a few moments? There is a bit of a
negotiation that you can help with."
Lora Kor looked surprised and pointed at his combadge, giving Bentall a
questioning look. Clearly not knowing what it was about either, Bentall
shrugged his shoulders. "Very well," the Captain said, interest piqued.
"I'll be there presently. Lora Kor out." The Captain then looked up.
"Thank you, Exec." Bentall nodded and left, with Lora Kor a step or two
behind. The coffee cup sat forgotten on the desk for a few minutes before
the computer decided it was unneeded and it dematerialized.
The Captain crossed the Bridge to the aft door, then crossed the deck 1
corridor, entering the double doors into the Wardroom. Dalton was already
there, sitting on one of the couches facing the big bay windows. Nearby,
Savant hovered a few inches off the deck, also apparently studiously
observing the slipstream corridor.
"This ought to be interesting," Lora Kor muttered to himself, letting the
Wardroom doors close behind him.
