Notes from the Captain:
Despite the jokes about this being a "Coronado-style first contact," this
mission is actually a meeting with a species that the Churchill survivors
have known about and have been dealing with for some time. In other
words, this isn't our fault! ;-)

Our current position is the Ji'sa system, which you'll find in Grid 002
(immediately to the left of Gateway on the large map on the first page).
Sim Title: "Black Ships", Part 1
U.S.S. Coronado has been ordered to the Ji'sa system, in our continuing
tour of Reorsan allies west of their space. U.S.S. Swiftsure continues a
similar mission east of Reorsa. The Ji'san, even by Reorsan standards,
are the most lukewarm of their allies, being unenthusiastic about space
travel in general and unenthusiastic about visitors in particular. We do
know a bit about their culture: it places a high premium on a strict caste
system, knowing one's place in the whole, as well as morality and personal
honor. In many ways, it mirrors Japanese culture on 18th and 19th century
Earth... but with late 20th and early 21st century level technology. In
short, the planet was NOT a viable candidate for first contact under the
Prime Directive. However, the Churchill survivors have of course shown
that they have little use for Starfleet General Order One.
Arriving at Ji'sa, we found that our briefing information was dead on: not
only did the Ji'sans ignore our arrival, it took three calls down to their
planet before they would respond. In the process of calling, we learned
two things: first, though the Reorsans have sold the Ji'sans shuttlecraft
with which to explore and exploit the resources of their home system, the
Ji'san are not using the shuttles. Second, we discovered that the Ji'san
are extremely sensitive in the use of language. Only after our greeting
was carefully phrased did they actually respond, and their response was
unenthusiastic to say the least. It was clear that they were tolerant of
our visit at best, actively opposed to it at worst. However, Ji'san
culture is so structured and polite that the response was apathetic rather
than actively hostile.
Given our mission and the unenthusiastic Ji'san response, the Captain
elected for only a small, unarmed Away team to pay our respects to the
Ji'san Council, known as the Sudyar caste. The team initially beamed
down to meet with the Sudyar's leader, Councilor Bryn Rinad. However, the
Away team, including the Captain, materialized inside a large airplane
hangar instead of Council chambers. The group was confused by this until
Councilor Rinad appeared and started the meeting by asking the Captain for
a favor. A bit non-plussed, the Captain agreed. The Councilor then led
the group to the six Reorsan shuttlecraft and asked that Coronado remove
them, as they were "not wanted." Although the Ji'san shuttlecraft pilots
seemed very angry at the Councilor's words, the Captain eventually agreed
that if the Ji'san didn't want the shuttles, that he would remove them.
Even more non-plussed, the Away team allowed Councilor Rinad to lead them
out of the hangar and into an old-fashioned six-wheeled carriage. The
carriage was pulled by six-legged beasts of burden not dissimilar from
horses. The Captain attempted to engage the Councilor in discussions
during the carriage ride, but Rinad made it clear that talking during the
ride would be unacceptable, so the team conferred amongst themselves and
with the ship instead, trying to determine what the Ji'san might want out
of the meetings.
We learned when, after following an isolated meandering path through a
lush garden, the carriage arrived at a large grey metallic building,
presumably the Sudyar Council chambers. Outside this building, faced by
Rinad and five other Councilors, the Captain and his team were told that
not only did the Ji'san desire that the team leave immediately, but they
also asked that we and our allies never return to Ji'sa again...

Aggie, aka Ungtae Brie, is a long-time Coronado simmer, and an
excellent one! His characters are always very creative, and Dr.
Ungtae is no exception. I'm waiting patiently for the good
doctor's characterization to settle down a bit [;-)], but in
the meantime, it would be unfair to delay Aggie's promotion.
Savant, from Lt. Commander to Commander
Last promotion date: 12-Feb-01, 24 sims
Savant is another long-time Coro simmer, having first joined
the sim in January 1998, more than 3.5 years ago! Since that
time, he has done a simply outstanding job of character
development and role-playing; he is, in fact, so good at this
that he makes the rest of us better. Thank you, Mouse!! :-)
