Excerpt from the Starfleet Academy training manual for exploration of
unknown habitats:
EXCERPT BEGINS
In approximately 200 years of exploration, Starfleet vessels have
encountered 83 instances of the phenomenon commonly known on Earth as a
"haunting." Hauntings can come in various shapes and sizes. In some cases,
it was once believed that the spirits of the dead can "rise again" in order
to disrupt the activities of the living. In extreme cases, these spirits of
the dead were said to possess the bodies of the living and force them to
take actions. Other times, these spirits confine themselves to simply
making unexplained noises, causing unexplained sights or smells, or
otherwise making a nuisance out of themselves.
In these modern times, of course, it should be noted that all 83 of these
phenomenon were later explained through other means. In the case of
possessions, each of those possession cases was later explained in part by
the activites of unknown alien intelligences, often non-corporeal ones.
While these possession cases are often extremely frightening and
disorienting, they are often benign. In the cases where they are not
benign, it should be noted that Starfleet officers should take care not to
cause serious physical damage to those possessed unless it is absolutely
necessary. Seek ways to drive the possessing lifeforms out of the beings
they may choose to possess without resorting to physical violence or
permanent harm. Often, the most evil-seeming intelligence can be reasoned
with.
In the cases where spirits of the dead have supposedly risen up in physical
form, these again were often explained through the actions of unknown alien
intelligences. Ditto the cases where non-physical representations such as
sights, smells, or other manifestations are noted. Again, be aware that all
83 cases noted in Starfleet records to date have been explained.
It is important that the potential Starfleet officer realize that while a
situation they find themselves in may seem inexplicable, it can nearly
always be explained through logical means. The important thing to remember
is that the Starfleet officer involved must keep his, her, or its head, and
not succumb to panic or unreasoning fear. No matter how inexplicable the
situation you may one day find yourself in, 100% of prior situations of this
nature have been explained; chances are yours will too in the end.
