The Coronado's Command Information Center was normally a very quiet place --
almost cathedral-like. A full 16 meters in diameter, the walls of the
hemispherical chamber were covered in viewscreens and holoprojectors.
Standing in the CIC, it was possible to review the LORASON data from the
Coro herself as well as sensor data from any number of platforms that could
transmit it there. Standing in the middle of the space, it was easy to
eventually began to feel as if you were standing in the middle of deep
space, watching things happen around you.
Of course, the purpose to the space was anything but oriented to standing
around and watching. From the CIC, a tactical commander could get an
overview of the movements of dozens of ships... or hundreds. It was easily
possible to control entire fleets from the CIC... or focus in on one
seemingly insignificant threat to that fleet. One's voice took on an
echoing quality in the enormous chamber, and because anything said in the
CIC could be relayed instantly to the bridge of the Coro... or the bridges
of dozens of ships, it was easy to begin to feel as if one had God-like
power and God-like knowledge of events as they transpired.
More than one person who entered the CIC had left it shaking, feeling as if
they had touched a tiny bit of the power of the immortal. A few refused
even to step inside. Others, of course, weren't so easily swayed.
Captain Tebrun Lora Kor entered the Coro's CIC at just past 3am that ship's
morning. "Ensign," he said as he entered, motioning over one of Lieutenant
Daren's Security people, "I'm told the Admiral is here." The man nodded and
pointed further into the CIC. Lora Kor thanked him and proceeded further
inside.
Approaching the man's back, he cleared his throat. "Admiral, I heard that
you had come aboard. If you'd let me know you were coming, I would have
made arrangements for quarters," the Captain said.
Vice Admiral Brian Aldur turned and regarded Lora Kor calmly. "Thank you,
Captain, but that isn't necessary. I'll be returning to the Stirling
presently," he said. "I just wanted --" he waved one hand around the CIC,
"to get a look at the situation first-hand. The holodeck image processors
on the Stirling are good, but sometimes there's no substitute for being
right in the middle of things," he finished with a very small smile. Aldur
was a human just entering his sixties, but who had reportedly not changed
all that much over a Starfleet career now spanning nearly four decades. His
hair, though gone somewhat salt-and-pepper grey and black, was still thick
and full, his motions still sure and with no wasted effort, his face almost
absent of wrinkles.
Lora Kor smiled easily. "Indeed, I can understand the inclination," he
said, looking at the latest updates on the multiple screens. Though it was
still unknown exactly what galaxy Task Group 5.4 found herself in, the CIC
now reflected a great deal of information about one slice of it nearly 120
light-years in diameter. Within that sphere, information about nearly 40
systems was reflected in addition to the close-range sensor data on
Pandemonium. Even longer range visual-scan information was also flowing in,
giving a general picture of the shape of this galaxy.
Aldur touched a control, and the Pandemonium system herself grew on two of
the screens. "The battle there is still raging," he said, pointing at
features here and there. "A couple of hours ago, a small group of probes
managed to get close enough to one of the biological entities to convert it
and its guardian starship -- the Edwin Hubble -- into antimatter. The other
six ships are holding their own, although the Klingon ship and one of...
ours -- the Chicago -- are showing heavy damage. The Traxati will probably
finish those two off in their next attack."
Lora Kor watched the display for a few moments, then nodded. "According to
this, they're continuing to ignore our fighter patrols," he said. Aldur
nodded.
"Neither side is apparently willing to increase their losses by interfering
with us," he said, then turned toward Lora Kor, returning the display to
normal. "Any word yet on the biological entity we captured or the close
range scans of Pandemonium on the Sutherland?" he asked.
The Captain smiled. "It's only been a few hours, Admiral. I suspect that
we'll have a few answers by morning," he said.
Aldur nodded. "Very well. In the meantime, I'd like to press our advantage
here a bit before the ambassador ship arrives. I'll be briefing the other
Captains at 0800 fleet time, but here's what I have in mind..."
