One of the nice things about being the a senior Captain in the Fifth Fleet
was the access one received to one's senior officers. When Captain Tebrun
Lora Kor approached the office of Captain Suzanna Blokpoel, the Fifth Fleet
Commanding Officer, he barely had to slow his stride on the way past her
adjutant's desk. "You can go right in, Captain," the man said, waving one
hand toward the inner office, "She's expecting you." Lora Kor nodded his
head to the Lieutenant Commander in thanks on his way by.

The office was apparently a temp, and reflected nothing of its occupant.
Captain Blokpoel was a stately Vulcan woman of indeterminant age, with long
hair, braided in back, combed straight forward in front. She stood as Lora
Kor entered and inclined her head at the chair across the desk from her.
"Captain Lora Kor," she said. "It is... agreeable to see you again. I
trust everything is well aboard the Coronado?" Lora Kor nodded and accepted
the invitation and sat; Blokpoel did a moment later.

"Quite well, Captain," Lora Kor said with a faint smile. "You received my
report of our recent encounter with the Traxati?" he asked. Earlier in the
evening, the Captain had transmitted a full report on the battle with the
Traxati probes near Starbase 247, and their encounter with the Galaxy class
starship Royal Oak. The Royal Oak was a near total loss, having had her
stardrive section rudely cut away from the saucer by neutronium needles
deployed from the probes. The probes had then taken the stardrive section
in tow -- still with 124 people aboard -- and left the area at high warp.
Particularly worrying was the fact that the probes possessed warp drive
nacelles. Up until recently, Traxati probes had been strictly reliant on
 sublight propulsion.

Blokpoel nodded. "I did. Starbase 247 is still at yellow alert, on my
orders, pending a full search of the area for additional Traxati probes."
She paused, then asked, "Has it been determined yet from where the probes
 originated?"

The Captain shook his head. "However, Starbase 742 is not far from known
Traxati holdings, including the Iju system. It is not inconceiveable that
there are unknown Traxati gateways somewhere between here and there. The
Royal Oak was attacked 84 light-years 'north' of the Talos Star Group.
There are at least 35 systems in the group, including the Talos Delta system
itself, and 28 more systems inside a 50 light-year envelope of the place
where she was attacked. The Traxati do not limit themselves to systems
containing class M planets the way we do -- gateways could be orbiting any
 of the stars."

"And our sensor scans of systems not containing class K, L, or M systems
often do not meet the minimum standards," Blokpoel said pensively. It was
as close to a "dirty little secret" as Starfleet had -- once it was
determined that a given system was not capable of supporting known lifeform
types, it was often decades before those systems were given the more
detailed scans that often turned up more unusual forms of life.

Lora Kor nodded. "We're using LORASON to change all that, where we can," he
 said.

Blokpoel nodded, as if making a decision. "Captain, as you know, I've
stepped down as the Commanding Officer of the Erasmus in order to better
fulfill my duties as Fifth Fleet Commanding Officer..." Lora Kor nodded,
and Blokpoel continued. "The new CO of the Erasmus shall be Commander Amy
DaSilva. As part of your run to Starbase 742, I'd like you to take special
care to scan the systems that you pass. See if you can determine the
locations of any new gateways along the route. The LORASON sensors you bear
will allow us to cut a 60 light-year wide path through the poorly-scanned
 systems."

Lora Kor paled slightly... "That's a scanning and mapping route almost
1,500 light-years long," he said, trying to hide his shock.

The Captain would later swear that he saw Blokpoel smile. He hadn't, of
course -- or had he? In any case, her voice completely lacked emotion when
she nodded and replied, "1,512, Captain, plus several hundred million
kilometers. However, I have complete confidence in your abilities in this
area." She paused. "That will be all, Captain. May your journey be
 productive."

Lora Kor nodded, still a little shell-shocked. "Thank you, Captain." The
Captain had forgotten the problem with being a senior Captain: your senior
 officers often expected the impossible.

"Commander Dejat, contact the Erasmus, tell them we're standing by, and
we'll proceed to Starbase 742 as soon as they are ready to depart," the
Captain said from the center seat.

"They report being ready now, Captain, but they'd still like to know what a
'nickelodeon' is," Dejat said from the Helm console with a sly smile.
Earlier, the Captain had congratulated the Erasmus on just missing the
battle with the Traxati probes with the odd phrase, "Welcome to the
 nickelodeon."

"Tell them..." Captain Tebrun Lora Kor laughed slightly. "Tell them that
they'll find a definition in the Federation standard language database. And
tell them that I hope their Tactical officer remembers where the phaser
 firing controls are."
