"Primus Naroth? The pilot of the ship that contacted us earlier is here to
see you."
"Thank you, Subcenturion. Send him in," Naroth said. Just entering middle
age, Naroth was among the youngest leaders of the many Rihannsu Swarms.
However, the long war with the Earthers had strained the Galae nearly to the
breaking point. There were fewer than 10 men or women of senior years left
in the Commander-General ranks; similarly, the ranks of the Senior
Centurions were also being laid to waste. All of the Primuses were under
tremendous pressure to find the Earth's breaking point and end the war.
Earth, Naroth mused, considering. When the Rihannsu had first encountered
their people, they seemed very much a fat old hlai, ready for the slaughter.
But the first slash of the Rihannsu blade had brought out the claws in the
beast -- the Earthers seemed to glory in war, in any excuse for
destruction... even more so than the Klingons. And if what tr'Idran had
told him was correct... Naroth shuddered. The Earthers' territory would
grow to nearly three times that of Rihannsu? Earthers spread throughout the
galaxy, like a disease? No! It must not be!
tr'Idran's appearance had been a revelation. Claiming to be a Rihannsu from
the future, Idran had backed up this extraordinary claim with extraordinary
evidence: his ship boasted incredibly powerful weapons, a miniature
stardrive the likes of which Naroth had never seen, a device that rendered
the entire ship invisible and undetectable... and a matter/energy transfer
device that was just short of magical. And not only was tr'Idran offering
to transfer the ship to Rihannsu control in exchange for asylum, he was
offering to teach any Rihannsu everything he knew about it.
A ship like this could end the war.
Naroth's musings were interrupted when his second visitor entered. The
Primus stood. "Welcome to the Rea's Helm, Senator," he said, saluting.
"Thank you, Primus," the visitor said, returning the salute. Naroth
regarded the man. Senator tr'Rhagarokk was tall, trim, and charismatic.
The Primus offered the Senator a seat then sat down himself, regarding him
closely. If what tr'Idran said was to be believed... Naroth turned his
attention back to what the new visitor was saying.
"...as I told you over subspace, only part of what tr'Idran has told you is
the truth. I realize that some of the claims I made over subspace are
probably hard to believe, but I am willing to provide all the evidence you
nee--," Rhagarokk was saying. Naroth leaned forward.
"Senator, I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's really only one thing I need,"
Naroth said pleasantly.
"Oh?" the Senator asked. "What is that?"
"Senator, you have not provided me with any information that disputes
Idran's basic claim -- that the Earthers will win this war, and that their
space will grow to many times the size of ours," Naroth said. Rhagarokk
started to interrupt, but Naroth cut him off. "If you take tr'Idran, I will
require your assistance in defeating the Earth ships that are even now
coming to destroy us."
Naroth regarded Rhagarokk's surprised expression with hard amusement. "Oh
yes, we know. tr'Idran showed us the records. In two days time, an Earth
fleet will fall on this Swarm and destroy it, nearly to the last man. Only
10 from my ship will survive, among them a man who will sire the next
Praetor. I myself," Naroth said with a trace of irony, "will be killed when
one of the Earth frigates destroys this ship. Now," Naroth said, leaning
forward again, "if you are truly Rihannsu, you will help me prevent this
disaster. If I cannot have the technology from tr'Idran's ship, which he
says is a captured Earther ship from the future, I want the technology from
yours."
Rhagarokk opened his mouth... and was unsure of what to say. "I realize,"
he began finally, "that it must seem that losing this war would be a
horrible thing, but--" At that moment, the door opened and tr'Idran stepped
in and regarded the Senator with a look of hatred and scorn. Rhagarokk
stood up to object, and Idran struck him down with a blast from a sonic
weapon, then stood over the fallen Senator and leaned over the Primus' desk.
"You see, Primus?" tr'Idran asked. "He is no Rihannsu. Such will be our
people in but a few hundred years." tr'Idran almost spat in rage. "Mere
puppets... ghosts of our former selves. You can see why I seek to change
the future."
Naroth nodded slowly. "I did not wish to believe," he said at last, then
flipped a switch on his desk. "Subcenturion Ishlan, report to the Primus'
office. I have a prisoner for you."
