"Subject number one... Vulcan male, age approximately 70. Pale skin and
dark, straight hair, indicating origins in the northern regions of Vulcan
around Shi'Kahr," Doctor Barnes said, leaning over the first of Renak Taj's
four operational stasis pods. As he read the information from the medical
scanners, Lieutenant Aurel Ian stood nearby, taking notes into the Security
log.

"Subject one appears to be in good health and in standard stasis, though
neurological activity is unusually low," Barnes concluded, then transferred
the biological data to Ian's PADD.

"DNA trace confirms identity ass Sorek, son of Sharik, Vulcan male age 72,
disappeared three weeks ago in the area around Vulcan's Forge," Ian read
from the Security log. "Family reported him missing two days later, no
information about his whereabouts... until now." The young woman made a
note to notify the man's family that he had been located nearly a thousand
light-years from Vulcan. Quite a journey to make in only three weeks...

"Subject number two... Horta transgender type three, age approximately
125..." The briefing continued, growing more and more depressing with each
revelation of treachery and kidnapping. "Subject number three... Betazoid
female, age approximately 28..."

"Subject number four... this one was in the destroyed stasis pod... Human
male, deceased, age at death approximately 62." Doctor Barnes went through
the rest of his report, then Ian picked up the thread. "This one's an
interesting one," Ian reported. "About two weeks ago, Dr. Timothy Leach of
Alpha Centauri gave a paper at the Vulcan Science Academy on covariant
subspace pulse technology. He was supposed to attend a Q&A session two
hours later." Ian looked up. "He never arrived."

Captain Tebrun Lora Kor, who had been standing in the corner of Sickbay,
frowning, now frowned even deeper. "And this is him?"

Ian nodded. "Yes, Captain. Unfortunately, DNA scans confirm it."

"Subject number five," Barnes concluded. "This is the odd one from the
medical standpoint. Female humanoid -- we're having trouble isolating
either her age or her species. The stasis pod on her is also easily the
most energetic of the five, almost as if it were one stasis pod within
another. I can't tell you very much more about her, unfornately." Lora Kor
turned to Ian.

"Well, we have a theory," Ian said uncertainly. "About a year ago, a
Kriosian empathic metamorph female was born, code name Songbird..." Ian
cleared her throat, then continued. "About four weeks ago, the metamorph
stasis pod was apparently stolen, and..."

Lora Kor, uncharacteristically, practically hissed. "You're telling me that
this is an empathic metamorph?" he asked angrily.

Ian nodded slowly. "An immature one, if so... that's our working theory,
anyway. We won't know until we can break the inner stasis pod out of the
outer one. Once we do that, we can conduct a more detailed scan of both her
and the pod."

The Captain nodded. "Very well," he said, his voice tight. Turning to
Barnes, he asked, "What is Renak Taj's condition?"

Barnes looked up. "Still unconscious. I don't expect him to awaken for
several hours. Other than that, though, he's fine. Surgery went well, and
he should make a full recovery." Lora Kor nodded again.

"Understood, thank you, Doctor," he said, then turned back to Ian. "Would
you have Commander Dejat join me in my Ready Room, Lieutenant?"

Ian nodded. "Yes, sir."
