A crowd of several dozen senior and junior officers, plus selected crew
members, had gathered in Coronado's wardroom. The Captain held up his hands
and waited patiently for the group to quiet down and take their seats, then
he stepped out in front of the big bay windows to speak. Behind him, the
light from the Dnoces system's orange star filled the wardoom with warm
light; the energy curtains dancing between the stars of the system gave the
room a ethereal glow. Lora Kor smiled as the crowd finally quieted down,
 then spoke.

"Good morning, everyone. I hope you all slept well, as today is likely to
be very busy," he said. "I've asked Dr. Rollins to explain to you what's
going to happen today," he continued, nodding at the young human scientist,
who nodded back. "During the proceedings, Coro's job will be to monitor,
provide any assistance required, and generally make sure that all of us make
it out of the system in one piece..." In the background, Dot Rollins
snorted. "...should anything amiss occur." Lora Kor looked over the woman
and winked. "I'm sure we're all interested to hear what Dr. Rollins has to
say, so I'll get out of her way and let her say it. Doctor?"

Lora Kor stepped out of the way, taking a seat near the front as Dr. Dorothy
Rollins stepped in front of the windows. "Thank you, Captain, for that
faint praise," she began, giving the Captain a mock salute, which he
returned in good grace. A holographic projection of the system sprang to
life near her, the five stars of the Dnoces system beginning their dance in
miniature, the nearby brown dwarf approching like a bowling ball.

"Here's the situation as it stands as of this moment," Rollins said, "and
I'd like to thank the Captain and Ms. Tal for round-the-clock access to
Coronado's sensors." Velorna Tal smiled and nodded. "As you can see, we're
about eight days from impact -- the brown dwarf will enter the system here,
disrupt the orbits of these two stars, and then finally hit the blue-white
star at this point," she said, pointing at the model, which followed her
words with the appropriate actions, "which will cause a cascade stellar
event in the system, almost certainly an expansion and collapse of the
blue-white star, reminiscent of but smaller than a full nova."

Discussion erupted in the room as several people commented on this to their
neighbors. Rollins waited patiently for the murmur to subside, then nodded.
"As many of you probably know, this is only the third stellar impact ever
recorded on-site by Federation science, and only the second that will be
recorded at this range," she said. "The cascade event will cause, among
other things, a rapid increase in ionic and harmonic subspace interference
in the system... almost certainly an ion storm of force seven magnitude,
perhaps force eight." The murmuring was much louder this time, and lasted
much longer before subsiding and again Rollins waited it out, that faint
 smile on her face.

"Force four and five activity is being recorded in the system at the
moment," Fornan Dejat mentioned from near the front, and Rollins nodded.
"Quite so, Commander," she said. "Now, let's get to why we're here." The
system model collapsed down to a single star, the orange one, and Coro,
Persiennes, Seagull, and the other four ships appeared near by. "Here is
our position, and as you can see, force five activity is already being
recorded here and here," she said, pointing at the new model. The hologram
closed in to concentrate on three ships, Seagull and two others, one a large
freighter, the other a small runabout-size ship.

"The larger ship is the Marco Polo, a typical Rigel class 3 freighter,"
Rollins said, pointing. "It's carrying equipment, consumables, repair parts
for our ships, and other sundries. She's been completely automated, and is
piloted from another of our ships, the Dasher. Otherwise, she's a very
typical freighter, and a ship that would be crushed by force four ion storm
activity, were the Seagull not protecting her." The model zoomed on the
smallest ship of the three. "This is the Sorceror. As you can see, from
the outside, she's a standard Yellowstone class runabout... however, any
familiarity you may have with such ships ends there. She's also completely
automated, but there is room for only one person aboard anyway. The rest of
the ship comprises a new system that I and my team have developed."

Several people, including the Captain, Tal, TPrax, and Dejat, leaned forward
as Rollins smiled and continued. "Describing the Sorceror's systems is well
beyond the scope of this briefing, and I can see several of you have already
read our basic documents... but the purpose to the Sorceror is to completely
neutralize an ion storm and its related subspace interference." Several
people gasped, and Rollins' smile widened. "I can see that many of you
understand the implications. The Federation has been searching for a way to
eliminate the threat of ion activity for more than 200 years now, a quest
that has been thought impossible at times." Rollins chuckled. "One
Zee-Magnees prize-winning physicist even called it the modern-day equivalent
of turning lead into gold, and said it would be impossible for hundreds of
 years."

Rollins killed the holographic model, which winked out. "Well, we currently
change lead into gold all the time, thanks to replicators, and I'm here to
tell you, that I and my team have solved this particular alchemy problem."
She smiled again. "Sorceror can stop an ion storm in its tracks, and
today... we're going to prove it."
