Federation time beacons don't lie.
The Federation time beacons were established in the late 23rd century as a
means of providing a single date and time across Federation space. The
beacons, actually long-range subspace transmitters, are positioned in
strategic locations all over Federation space and continuously transmit the
date and time on a specific subspace frequency. Any Federation starship,
planet, colony, or outpost can access any beacon and receive the exact date
and time (after adjusting the response for the transmission distance, of
course).
This "Stardate" system is used across the Federation, for everything from
business contracts to government meetings. If a single starship contacted
every single beacon in the Federation, the same date and time information
would be received from all of them.
Federation time beacons don't lie.
It took the U.S.S. Enterprise only seven minutes to transmit a new set of
communications protocols to the U.S.S. Coronado. These new protocols
specified not only a much higher transmission speed, but also specified a
number of highly complex encryption sequences. However, once the new
protocols were loaded into the Coro's communications system, the apparently
garbled transmissions of the time beacons, location beacons, and Federation
news service became understandable.
And they were all dated April 25, 2486.
The bad news didn't end there. It didn't take Sickbay long to establish
that Lt. Commander Reckoning was not dead, but in fact in a coma.
Unfortunately, however, it also didn't take long to establish the reason
for the coma: Reckoning had been poisoned in the recent past! The poison,
some kind of neural-reactive agent, was going to be very difficult to
isolate and treat for. Until that could be done, Reckoning would be of no
help to the Coronado.
Even worse, however, was a report from Engineering that arrived soon after.
Scans of local space revealed that any form of subspace propulsion was going
to be completely impossible. The Coro's matter-antimatter reactor was
functioning perfectly, but was unable to establish a warp field. The ship's
faster-than-light data network, which also relied on subspace physics, was
also disabled. Without the boost provided by the warp engines, slipstream
propulsion was also going to be unavailable.
The news didn't get any better when the senior staff of the Coronado
convened aboard the Enterprise for a staff meeting with Captain Kile...
