Travelling the corridors of Enterprise, Lt. Commander Dalton finally found
himself in the ship's spacious crew lounge. He was late for most of the
performances, but there was only one that he was interested in hearing,
anyway. Lt. Christopher McCutcheon had composed a number of songs in honor
of the mission that the "Thousand Ships" would soon be undertaking on the
other side of the Hypergate... the founding of a new Federation.
As Dalton entered, he surveyed the packed audience and found a wall to lean
against. McCutcheon was just settling down onto a stool, an apparently
ancient sandalwood six-string guitar in his hands. Captain Kile quickly and
professionally introduced the young human to the audience, then settled back
into his chair.
Christopher began to play, simple chords, brisk and rhythmic, a cross
between a sea chantey and an Irish folk song. The preamble was short and
when he opened his mouth to sing, his voice was bright and high, a young
voice full of promise:
"I was sixteen years and I knew know fears,
when the thousand ships' keels were laid.
And from the words of Captain Lee,
sweet promises were made.
'Come with me, you'll be flying free,
living in the stars!
If you cast your stake and say you'll take
the caravan to Antares.'
The first few verses were sang with innocence, the McCutcheon's voice
shining with the bright joy of the song's narrator, strong with the
narrator's bold confidence as his youthful dreams of starflight came true.
Christopher sang of a glorious sailing, a true cause, a steady course, and
the audience sang the refrain with him:
"Look at me, I'm flying free,
living in the stars!
Cast my stake and said I'd take
the caravan to Antares."
Dalton watched with clinical detachment as the singer and the audience
bonded, as the audience found something familiar in the words. Though the
song was a romance in a fictional world, they saw past the disguise, or
thought they did. The faces in the audience showed it: he's singing about
us. He's talking about me.
And as the song went on and the tone became darker, the voice harder, the
narrator battered by disappointments and disillusionment, the faces of the
audience began to be etched by resistance, even anger.
{{They don't want to hear it,}} Dalton thought sadly. {{They don't want to
hear that their new Federation and its founding won't all be wonderful.}}
