Coming out of Admiral Zrq's office, Commander Lora spotted Ka'tek almost
immediately -- waiting for him. "You must have been VERY persuasive," Lora
said, amused. "I've never seen Zrq so agreeable in my life."
Ka'tek's amusement matched Lora's -- he laughed and clapped Lora on both
shoulders. "It has been too long, my friend!" he said, then added "Which
life?" as he fell into step with the Coronado's Trill commanding officer.
The two men headed immediately for Docking Bay 6, to which Coronado had been
moved after the day's earlier incident. Ka'tek's Bird of Prey was no doubt
already half-dismantled after the mess it had made of Docking Bay 7.
"Pick any of the three hosts that met him," Lora replied. "According to the
Admiral," he added, still amused, "I am to give you any assistance you
need."
Ka'tek smiled, showing teeth. "Excellent. I promise I will make my needs
as... painless as possible," he said. The Klingon was looking as fit as
he had ever seen him, Lora noted. An even two meters, Ka'tek vestai-Kharas
towered over the much shorter Trill. Ka'tek was heavily muscled, a giant
even among Klingons, and extremely intimidating looking. However, Ka'tek's
looks were deceiving: he was one of the most thoughtful Klingons Tebrun had
ever met. At 61, he was just entering Klingon middle age.
"So, what is this about?" Lora asked.
"Following the recent... difficulties in my homeland," Ka'tek said -- Lora
suppressed a snort; only Ka'tek would refer to a civil war as
a 'difficulty.' "I have been selected as a member of the Klingon High
Council," Ka'tek finished. Lora stopped cold.
"Well, congratulations!" he exclaimed, thinking quickly. "But I don't
understand -- those other Klingon ships were trying to tear you apart!"
Ka'tek nodded grimly. "Though the Council would like the Federation to
believe the rebellion is over, there are still rebel forces at large," he
said. "They cannot hide within Klingon space -- they would be hunted down
and destroyed if they did not accept amnesty," he continued, "and there are
those for which the amnesty program is tantamount to a dishonorable death.
They will NOT accept such dishonor," he finished.
Lora crossed his arms and nodded. "Go on," he said. "I can understand
that, but you haven't explained why they were specifically after YOU."
Ka'tek's face clouded in anger briefly, then cleared. "Perceptive as ever,
friend Kor," he finally replied. "I am... not universally admired among
Klingons. Though I and my House are honored by the current Chancellor and
other Council members, the rebels know that should I ascend the Council,
things would go... badly for them." Ka'tek stood straighter. "They will
stop at nothing to kill me... or at least prevent my arrival in the Great
Hall by the appointed date," he continued. "Either way, if I do not appear
to accept my place on the Council by the 21st day of MaQ'ta, the seat will
pass on, perhaps to one more... friendly to their interests," he finished.
Lora nodded, relaxing a bit. "So, you need an escort to Qo'noS," he said.
"In part," Ka'tek agreed. "However, your ship -- while admirable -- will
not allow me to make the journey in safety. We will need an escort."
Ka'tek smiled grimly. "Fortunately, there are a number of rebellion ships
docked at a neutral base nearby that will serve. They will be departing
shortly to engage forces of your Starfleet..." Ka'tek's expression turned
amused. "Those of your own rebellion, I believe."
This time he didn't attempt to suppress it -- Lora snorted and waved one
hand. "All right. So, you want our assistance in capturing those ships,"
he said. Ka'tek nodded. "What of their crews?" he asked.
Ka'tek smiled again, and this time the smile was not a pretty sight. "Leave
the rebels to me," he said simply.
