Commander Lora exited the turbolift on deck eight and passed from the
Engineering Support saucer module into the Intelligence Support module. A
relatively late addition to the Coronado, the module was intended as a
platform for both tactical and scientific intelligence and research.
However, the Coro's short-handed launch meant that the module had spent
the ship's first seven weeks almost empty.
The whole module was an interesting place not only for its uniqueness, but
apparently for the almost borderline renegade design team that had put it
together. Pulling everything they could about intelligence and counter-
intelligence into one facility, they'd made the module the preeminent mobile
facility for such research... theoretically.
Theoretically because as the systems in the module came on line, it was
becoming increasingly clear that not all of them had been throughly tested.
An attempt to use the Strategic Analysis lab to determine a home planet for
the Killers had turned up nothing useful, and had burned out a power relay.
The Technology Assessment lab was a mess, and not usable at all. And now
Savant, the ground-breaking artificial intelligence command liaison program,
was apparently out of order.
Crossing into the Intelligence Support module computer center, he found
Cadet Oswald running a tricorder over an entire wall of biometric computer
modules and swearing softly to herself. Lora stopped for a moment to watch
her -- Oswald was easily the youngest person aboard Coronado and Lora was
interested to see how she was handling the strain. A first-year Academy
student, she was part of an experimental program designed to get Cadets
into the field earlier, and increase their "on-the-job" training.
Lora cleared his throat so as not to startle her, then stepped further into
the room. "Any luck, Cadet?" he asked.
"No, Captain," Oswald said, gulping. "I can't figure out why the program
matrix won't reinitialize. Everything seems to be fine," she went on.
Lora smiled, hoping to put the young woman at ease. "I understand, Cadet.
Do your best. It's not a critical project -- Savant is useful, certainly,
and I for one was getting used to her cheerful personality..." Lora was
rewarded with a small smile. "...but don't burn yourself out or make
mistakes because your tired."
Oswald nodded. Lora's combadge chose that moment to chitter at him.
"Captain," Tal's voice called from it, "we're almost within detection range
of that fleet. If you want to launch that shuttle, now's the time."
Lora smiled once more at Oswald, then turned back toward the door, tapping
the combadge. "Understood, Exec. I'm on my way."
