The doorbell to Commander Lora's Ready Room rang as the Coronado's CO was
going over the ship's readiness reports from Lieutenant Bentall's
Engineering staff. "Come in," Lora said without looking up at the door.
Lt. Commander Tal entered, crossing to Lora's desk. "Commander," she said,
"a Starfleet vessel has answered your request for information about the
chemical traces we found on the machine."
For more than two weeks, the science staff had been going over the design
of the self-replicating machine that the Coronado had salvaged from the
Zadar system right before leaving. While the machine itself wasn't giving
up many of its secrets, Mr. Trq had identified a unique chemical trace on it
that might be used to track it to its source of manufacture.
In theory, any time an object is created, there are chemical traces
inherent in its construction that can be traced back to its parent star.
Even a bar of chocolate, after being replicated in the ship's lounge, would
show the unique chemical traces of Sol, assuming the original cocoa beans
used to make the bar were harvested there. In the same way, using the
chemical traces from the machine, it should be possible to find the
original star where those machines were manufactured.
Lora turned off the report and looked up. "Go on," he asked, indicating
the chair in front of his desk. Tal sat.
"The report came in from the U.S.S. Triton. They're about eighty lights
from here, and about five lights from the target, on the books as the
MJ-1020 system. It's only been charted, never surveyed directly, mostly
because it didn't have any planets when it was charted, 71 years ago."
Seeing where this was going, Lora leaned forward and asked the obvious
follow-up question. "And now?"
Tal nodded. "And now it's showing one planet orbiting at 175 million
kilometers. The sensor readings coming off our new planet are... well,
I'll let you look for yourself, sir." Tal handed Lora a PADD.
Tal accepted it and turned in on. Within ten seconds, his eyebrows went
up. Ten seconds after that, he looked up and said, "Exec, plot a course
for MJ-1020, slipstream velocity."
