Commander Tebrun Lora watched the slipstream conduit pensively from the
forward windows in Seventh Heaven. In 20 hours or so, the Coronado would
arrive in the system, along with her small flotilla of ships. Thanks to Lt.
Commander Tal, that flotilla was increased by two: a pair of colonial
transport ships. Stripped of engines years before, the ships were unable to
jump to warp themselves, but that was little problem. Even now, they were
being towed by the Adventure and the Lewis toward the Zadar system.
In 20 hours or so, Coronado would arrive.
Less than two days after that, Zadar 3 would cease to exist.
Nearly 100,000 people had already been evacuated to Starbase 324, and nearly
another 50,000 would be able to survive the destruction of the planet on
refugee camps on Zadar 3's moon and on Zadar 4. Over the next week, even
those final evacuees would be pulled out.
But the vast majority of the planet's population, some 825 million people,
were doomed -- Zadar 3 would soon be coming apart around them.
The planet's population was facing their fate, if not with equanimity, than
at least with the knowledge that their species and their knowledge would not
be wiped out. Most of the planet's computer libraries had been transmitted
to the Coronado's computer, and from there, to Starbase 324. Precious works
of art, some of them thousands of years old, had also made the journey, many
aboard the colony ships. Thousands of other items would be beamed from the
planet and left either on the planet's moon or on Zadar 4, depending on
whether or not they would stand up to vacuum.
Genetic samples, embryos, and DNA sequences from thousands of species native
to Zadar had also been collected, as well as a few live plants and animals.
Even now, the Federation Council was debating which of three dozen possible
colony worlds would be given to the Zadarians as their new home. Once this
was decided, they would get a fresh start, complete with protectorate
Federation membership and all the assistance they could want.
But it would not be the same, and there would be 825 million destroyed
corpses in the Zadar system to prove it.
On the planet itself, days-long parties had begun, celebrating all that the
Zadarians had become. There were surprisingly few riots, surprisingly few
demonstrations. The Zadarians were a singularly civilized people, and
Tebrun wondered how many "more advanced" species would have handled similar
circumstances. Not as well, he suspected.
The Zadarians would survive the destruction of their planet, and some few
were asking permission to enter Starfleet, presumably to seek out their
planet's Killers.
But where would the search begin?
