Commander Tebrun Lora ran both hands through his already mussed hair, then
turned and leaned over his desk. "Mr. Trq, while I appreciate you feel our
task is hopeless," he said with uncharacterstic heat. "I really could do
without the jokes about the Seven Labors of Hercules." Lora pushed himself
up. "Now, can you please tell me where we stand without the attempts at
 humor?"

The science officer regarded Lora with an expression one part hurt, one part
detached, and one part surprised, as if he hadn't expected his commentary to
cause a problem. "Very well, Captain," he said mildly and started tapping
on the PADD in his lap. To the left, the large screen in the Ready Room lit
 up. "Here's the situation..."

Zadar 3, Zadar 4, and a number of icons appeared on the screen representing
ships in local space. "Zadar 3 was struck three weeks ago tomorrow. I have
rigged a multispatial probe to follow the neutronium needle; the anti-
neutronium one has already reached the planet's core. By my calculations,
we have approximately 15 more days before the planet is destroyed." The
view on the screen closed to bring Zadar 4 into view.

"That's 35 days total from impact to demolition. We conducted our First
Contact on day 2, and evacuations started half-way into day 2. Assuming
that we get all of day 35 to conduct evacuations, that's 33.5 days total."
Narque continued tapping at his PADD.

"The Adventure and the Lewis, the colony ships you requested, can hold
5,500 people each when loaded to capacity. It takes them one full day to
conduct the loading, then two days to reach Starbase 324, the closest
Federation facility, at slipstream velocity escorted by the Coronado. One
day to off-load, then two full days back." On the screen, the icons
representing Adventure and Lewis began making this circuit, with Coro
escorting them to Starbase 324 and back. "That's six days, meaning that
both ships will be able to make five complete passes, and will be ready
for their sixth when the planet is destroyed. In addition, Coro herself
can and has been carrying 425 passengers during each run. 11,425 people
per transit, six transits. That's 68,550 people total."

Lora nodded, grimly. "OK, understood. Go on."

Trq nodded and did so. "The refugee camps can hold 13,500 people at full
capacity. Assuming we have both camps fully occupied when the planet is
destroyed, that will add another 13,500 saved. Our 120 lifeboats can hold
an additional 640, and both colony ships have three runabouts each. 40
people in each would be an additional 120. 82,810."

Lora sighed. "Good. Now, what about Mr. Dalton's... fleet?" The Commander
 smiled despite himself.

"Ah yes," Trq said. "Mister... Dalton. Well, a total of 27 ships have
arrived in the system, but I would not permit Mr. Dalton himself to board
one of them. That leaves 26." Trq frowned as even this small joke was
ignored, cleared his throat disapprovingly, and continued.

"Seventeen of the ships have sufficient shielding that they can pass through
a slipstream conduit that we generate safely. Between them, they have a
total capacity of 1,628 people. Sixteen of the seventeen have agreed to all
six transits. The last has agreed to four, and says he has... 'other
engagements' for the remaining two. It doesn't much matter though, because
that ship's capacity is only 52 passengers." Trq redid the calculations on
his PADD to confirm his earlier work, then nodded. "9,964 saved there."

"And the remaining nine ships?" Lora asked.

"Most are small cargo ships that would never survive a voyage at slipstream,
but all nine are sufficiently fast to make one transit to Starbase 324 then
return for a second before the planet is destroyed. Their total capacity
is larger, though: 3,280 per transit between them. So, another 6,560 will
 be saved by those ships."

Lora stood and turned, looking out the window to his Ready Room. "Give me
a total, Mr. Trq. Out of 825 million, we will be saving...?"

Trq gulped. Even he was reluctant to say it, but he did finally.

"Just under one hundred thousand, Captain. 99,334, to be exact."
