Sim Title: "Agnus Dei", Part 1
Coronado returned to the Zadar system after her third trip ferrying
refugees from the doomed third planet to find that conditions had changed
significantly during her absense. In orbit of the sixth planet, the
machines that apparently originally manufactured the needles that were
instrumental in destroying Zadar 3 were multiplying geometrically. Where
before there were only about 1,000 of them in orbit, when Coro returned
there were more than 5,000, and more are being constructed every day. The
Science team set to work on a way of neutralizing them.
Meanwhile, in the refugee camps on Zadar 4, things were going even more
badly. Ignoring Coronado's instructions, the camps designed for 15,000
people had been filled to nearly 100,000, straining their capacity past
their limits. The Zadarians, desperate to save their people, were clearly
overestimating the capacity of the camps -- the food supplies were gone and
the domes were leaking by the time Coronado returned. Fortunately, the XO
had thought to resupply Coro at Starbase 324 while waiting for the colony
ships to be unloaded.
While the Marines went to work repairing the facilities in the camps and
building a new dome, Lieutenant Bentall hatched a plan to save more of
the Zadarians: manufacturing impromptu stasis chambers to hold the
refugees during transit and on the surface of Zadar 4. While this plan
might not save many, Commander Lora pointed out that every life saved
would be important, especially since the best estimates Lieutenant Trq
could come up with indicate that less than 100,000 Zadarians will be
saved before their planet is destroyed...
