"You wanted to see me, Admiral?"

"Yes, Captain, come in." Vice Admiral Ross crossed behind his desk in his
temporary quarters aboard Deep Space Nine. He waved Aldur toward a chair
 in front of the desk.

Aldur sat down, a curious look on his face. He had only met Vice Admiral
Ross once before, at a symposium held long before the Dominion war. He was
regarded as serious, competent, professional... a throughgoing realist.
However, the Admiral was *also* known for a certain ruthlessness and
implacability. There were rumors that officers under his command need only
produce results -- the means to those ends were rarely called into question.

Quite frankly, the man made Aldur a little nervous.

"Let's get right down to it, Captain. I'm afraid I have some rather bad
news for you," the Admiral said.

The Captain leaned forward, a questioning look on his face. "Admiral?"

"Captain, as you might be aware, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers arrived
on station a few days ago to meet us upon our return to DS9..." Aldur
nodded. "During that time, they've been evaluating the ships of the Second
and Sixth Fleets. With the war more or less over, we're going to be
concentrating Starfleet's resources into completing the new ships on the
line and repairing only the more lightly damaged vessels."

Aldur nodded slowly, a knot forming in his stomach. "Which means..."

The Admiral leaned forward. "Brian, you did an outstanding job at
Cardassia Prime. You distracted part of the Breen home guard... your
Marines destroyed a good portion of the Jem'Hadar garrisons on the planet.
Coronado and Renegade both came home more or less intact..."

"Admiral, with all due respect, where is this trail of sugar leading?"

Ross smiled faintly. "All right, Captain; I'll get to the point. Coronado
and Renegade were savaged at Cardassia Prime. They're two of the most
damaged ships at DS9 right now, and with the materials shortages... I'm
afraid I've put both ships at the bottom of the refurbishing queue. It
will be at least six months before either ship flies again."

Aldur started to protest, but the Admiral held up both hands. "Captain, I
realize this is coming as a shock to you, but even if you'd retained the
Coro, your tour as her CO ends in what? A month? Six weeks? You were
assigned for two years, Brian. That two years is over now. I'm ending
Coronado's current tour as of this date. You and your officers will report
 to Starbase 247 for reassignment."

The Captain took a deep breath, then nodded, not trusting himself to speak.

"Don't look so glum, Captain. You and your officers are the most valuable
commodities we have right now -- experienced Starfleet officers. I daresay
that with your war record, you'll have your choice of assignments in either
Military or Intel ops. Command of a Miranda wing... a Starbase... there's
a whole fleet of new starships in the pipeline."

Aldur nodded again. "I understand, Admiral, but Coronado..."

Ross nodded, not unsympathetically. "We all remember our first ships,
Captain. But eventually, we hand them over to less experienced skippers
and move on. It's time for you to do that."
