"I'm glad other ships have time to have drills," Brian Aldur muttered,
standing over the computer terminal on his desk in the Ready Room.
Outside the window, the ships of the Second Fleet continued to gather.
There were now seven full task groups out there, including the Romulan
Second Fleet flagship D'ridthau.
"Captain?" Tollory asked. He shifted in his seat and glanced at Dauber,
who was sitting next to him.
Aldur spun the terminal around so that the doctors could see the message
on it. On the screen, the Chief Medical Officer of another ship was
describing a drill that her Captain had ordered. "Other ships are having
drills," Aldur said to them wryly, "while we're out here guaranteeing the
security of the Federation. Meanwhile, the tactical and casualty report
for this sector is probably being displayed on this doctor's screen,
instead of here where I need it." A bit more force than was necessary on
the control pad cleared the log.
Aldur tapped his combadge. "Aldur to Engineering -- we're still getting
computer problems thanks to that grazing hit from our Breen friends."
Sandra's voice was tinny over the combadge as she replied that she was
aware of it and that the maintenance team was still working on it. Aldur
closed communications, then uncharacteristically continued to complain.
"Six messages to me in the last day -- strategic briefings, tactical
reports, Mithras knows what -- and all of them have been replaced with
personal or Captain's logs from other ships. One of them was so mangled
it had Admiral Hayes' name on top of a personal letter to Earth..."
Dauber's voice cut through the Captain's diatribe. "The power fluctuations
from that Breen weapon graze scrambled the computers. We're having all
kinds of computer-related problems in Sickbay, Captain." She smiled as the
Captain started, then looked vaguely annoyed at himself. It was rare to
catch the Captain out like that.
Tollory nodded, somewhat amused. "I think it's a small price to pay. I've
never seen such a party as the one on Sovereign after we brought back that
Breen ship."
Aldur nodded. "I think we put the starch back into Starfleet." He paused
a moment. "Now, gentlemen, to cases." The Captain turned to Dauber. "Any
new word on our... guest?"
"Well, he's still dead, if that's what you mean, Captain. But yes, we now
know a little more about him. He was male, and he was dead before he was
disintegrated. It's just a guess, but I think he died of a burst appendix
or similar medical condition. And your hunch was right." Dauber paused a
moment, then continued. "He was Camelynian. DNA traces confirm it."
Aldur nodded grimly. "So. We have more than one Camelynian aboard, and
they're willing to kill their own man to keep their presence aboard a
secret." Dauber paused again, then nodded. "I assume you've informed
Commander Marshall of this?"
"Not yet, Captain, but I certainly can," the CMO replied.
"Do it," Aldur said, then turned to Tollory. "Any new word from Betazed or
Angel One?" he asked.
Tollory shook his head. "But that's probably connected to the computer
problems. It *is* confirmed that the Dominion is taking revenge for their
destroyed facilities, though. The Quickening virus has been released on
both planets. Angel One, in particular, is expecting on the order of a 96%
death rate." Tollory's face was both tragic and grim at the same time.
"There is still no cure for that particular Dominion weapon. I haven't yet
received fatality estimates for Betazed."
Aldur pressed both of his hands together in thought, then nodded. "Thank
you, Doctors. That will be all. Inform me if we receive any new
information... on either situation. Dismissed."
