[Operation Rainbow Five, Day 7]
The shockwave from the destruction of Chynoweth 2 struck the Coronado. The
ship shuddered and seemed to scream as the deck lurched a meter to the right,
throwing everyone not seated off their feet. The noise was incredible -- the
groan of tortured metal combined with the sickening vibrations caused by the
shockwave. Somewhere nearby, there was a hideous tearing-breaking-hissing
noise. But at least there was no screaming, yet.
"Stabilize!" Aldur yelled over the noise from the command chair, holding on
with both hands.
Lehman, somehow managing to retain her seat, fought to compensate, turning
the ship perpendicular to the wave as Coro fought to escape. A moment or two
later, she was successful: Coronado, still accelerating, broke ahead of the
shockwave and clear. The blast wave was still expanding, but not with the
terrifying speed of the first few sections after the planet's destruction.
Aldur surveyed the Bridge while Sirius and Wallace attempted to determine the
fate of the Coro's assault runabout, U.S.S. Bishop, and the fighter Marshall
had been piloting. Standing, he looked around. The Environmental Monitoring
console had blown out again, he noted, and part of the ceiling in that area
had given way, spilling broken conduits, sparks, and smoke into the port aft
part of the Bridge -- presumably, that had been the noise he had heard -- but
it didn't seem too serious.
"Sirius, get me a damage report, and somebody find out what happened to Twain
and Wallace," Aldur said, hesitating. "Find out if they're still alive."
Not waiting for a response, Aldur turned to finish surveying the Bridge. He
turned toward DuLac, shuddering a bit at the memory of the Camelynian, pale,
face a mask of rage, covered in blood (some his own, most not) ordering the
destruction of a world.
"Damn!" Aldur breathed, then tapped his combadge. "Medical emergency!
Medical team to the Bridge!" He moved quickly over to DuLac, who had
apparently been pitched to the deck in front of his station, and not gotten
back up. There was a spreading stain of blood underneath him.
"Lan!" Lehman screamed as her chair came around and she rocketed out of it
toward the Knight. Several of the others on the Bridge also turned...
