Admiral Namimby walked quickly down a side corridor in Starbase 247's Intel
Ops deck until he reached one of the small labs. He entered without knocking
then glanced around the small chamber. Spotting Toria, he approached, his
voice gruff but not unkind.
"C'mon. This is no longer a research project," he told her.
Startled, the young Lieutenant gathered up her materials -- some on PADDs,
most on flimsy printouts -- and followed the Admiral back into the corridor.
Namimby added to her load by handing her a PADD. "What's this?" she asked,
taking it and turning it on.
"Scan data from a ship that's docking right now. They seem to have confirmed
your theory." Namimby crossed a side corridor, then passed through a
spectacular transparent aluminum connecting bridge overlooking the Starbase's
vast docking area. He moved quickly, without seeing it. Toria, engrossed
in the PADD, didn't see it either, and nearly bumped into the Admiral when
they reached the turbolift. The two officers entered.
The public address system took that moment to make an announcement: "Ops to
all decks... Ops to all decks... U.S.S. Coronado arriving, bay 4. Repeat,
Coronado arriving, bay 4. First shuttle departs in ten minutes." Namimby
nodded thoughtfully to himself.
"Docking Bay 4," he ordered the TL.
Toria looked at the Admiral out of the corner of her eye as she looked at the
scan readings. "I take it Coronado is the ship you're talking about..." The
Admiral nodded. Toria held up the PADD. "Is this what I think it is?"
As Namimby answered, the turbolift doors opened, and Toria had to hurry to
follow the much larger man's stride toward the gangway and airlock. "They
have evidence that there was a changeling aboard a Federation starship as
early as 2168," Namimby called over one shoulder. Toria stopped, startled.
Several of the flimsies slipped out of her nerveless fingers and settled to
the deck below.
Namimby nodded as Toria recovered and scooped up her paperwork, then helped
her back up and led her by the elbow toward the gangway and Coronado.
----------------
Three hours later, following a brief meeting with the commanding officer of
the Coronado, Namimby was on the move again. Again, he set of in search of
one of the young members of the staff. According to the computer, he could
be found in one of the smaller docking ports that filled Starbase 247.
Arriving, he crossed another transparent aluminum corridor bridge. This
time, however, he took a moment to admire the starship filling the bay.
"The Queen of the Fleet," he thought with a small smile as he admired her
lines. "Soon, you'll be out there again, defending the Federation from her
enemies," he promised her silently.
There was a certain poetry in the thought, and Namimby smiled as he set off
in search of Lt. Dev Wallace. According to the reports, Wallace had served
on Coronado, and was Namimby's best source for information on whether her
Captain and crew could handle the mission Namimby had in mind.
Crossing the remainder of the bridge, Namimby came even with the ship's
registration and markers, painted in two-meter high letters on the
secondary hull. He noted them as he passed, one more thing that would have
to be modified before the ship could fly again...
