 ..The destruction of the aircraft carrier Independence by the rebels
 seemed to dishearten the American forces in the region.  Aboard the
 carrier's sister ship, the U.S.S. Freedom, Rear Admiral Winslett
 communicated the destruction of the carrier to Washington.

 A mass of naval bombers followed the nuclear cruise missile, and
 after firing a block of anti-ship missiles into the American task
 group, retreated.  They did not get very far, however.  The naval
 fighters from Independence and Freedom decimated the bomber
 formation, and few of them returned home.  The damage had been
 done, however: 12 of the missiles entered the formation, destroying
 four ships.

 For the next 40 minutes, the American politicians dithered (a common
 reaction to crises from President Quayle; see chapter 27), and then
 elected not to respond with a nuclear strike of their own, though it
 was later shown that several ships in the task group were capable of
 it -- the wreckage of the Yorktown carried four nuclear-tipped
 Blackrazor cruise missiles, for instance.

 The battle raged on during this indecision, resulting in the loss of
 several rebel submarines to American frigates, and the destruction
 of the American destroyers Langley and Fort Meade.  In addition, the
 American strike bomber force assembled over the task group, and
 prepared to get underway.

 It was at that point that the Siberian space-drive fighter entered
 the fray again, firing missiles and bombs almost at random into
 American combatants that were doing well against the rebel forces.
 Before itself being shot down by the combined efforts of several
 American fighters, it wreaked havoc on the bomber group, forcing
 them to retreat.

 At the same time, the amphibious force of American Marines were
 also driven back by the Yukon cruiser Arlington, before that ship
 was itself destroyed by missiles from the American frigate
 Coronado.

 In short, all sides were forced into a retreat from their adversarial
 positions, and moved quickly to forge a fragile peace.  However, the
 damage to American pride had been done, and the country was forced to
 remove the 53rd star from her flag -- the country had 52 states until
 the country's disillusion in 2079.

 Even more damaging to the country, though, were the loss of natural
 resources that losing Alaska caused, as well as the increased
 terrorism and sabre-rattling that Americans were forced to endure
 going into the middle years of the 21st century.  More on that in
