 "Don't go!"

Brian Aldur came awake from the nightmare with a start and swung his head
around, staring around the darkened quarters, disoriented and unsure where
he was. It was a few moments before he regained his memories... before
the memories of pain, loss, suffering would leave him -- even now, five
years later, the memories of those few months back in '74 could still
 unsettle him.

Brian rolled over and regarded his wife's sleeping form. Gently, he
pulled back the dark hair and tenderly kissed the back of her neck. She
murmured in her sleep, but didn't otherwise stir. Brian nodded -- he
hadn't called out then, because if he had, she surely would have awoken.
Pushing the blankets to one side, he rose from the bed and crossed to the
 bureau with its attached sink.

Pulling the sink out both turned on a small yellowish light and started
the water flowing, and he reached down to capture some water and splash it
on his face. Pulling a nearby towel, he dried off again then regarded his
reflection somberly. Had it really been five years? He nudged the sink
back into the bureau with his hip, hung up the towel, and crossed to the
 window.

Perversely, the station's current orientation put just the right splash of
stars in his view -- he could see the bright pinpoint of D7 clearly. Even
now, he could find that pinpoint no matter where he was. Ships leaped
across sectors in a few days, the constellations shifting as they did so,
and still Brian Aldur could find D7, even in an unfamiliar starfield.
Aldur could beam down to a new world anywhere in Alpha quadrant, and he
could find it. Even now, what had happened to Coro, her crew, and himself
there was something that he couldn't forget in waking moments or sleeping.

Ironic that it had all begun not long after the loss of Jessi Anderson.
More ironic that everyone he knew at D7 was some 5000 years dead...
