 Personal Log, Commander Brian Aldur, Stardate 50653.4 (Excerpt)

 After more than three weeks at Deep Space 12, trapped there awaiting a
 runabout to my next assignment (and after assisting there with a couple
 of situations -- I never realized life on a starbase could be so...
 "interesting"), I have finally arrived at Starbase 247 to take command
 of the Starfleet Intelligence Jaunt Project.  Just in time, as it turns
 out: Commodore Barret has scheduled a second test flight of the Jaunt
 drive prototype starship U.S.S. Einstein for later in the week.

 The Romulan government still "disavows all knowledge of the renegades"
 that disrupted the first test flight several weeks ago... who knows?
 They might even be telling the truth.  However, for the second test
 flight, Starfleet has decided to take no chances, and has assigned the
 U.S.S. Coronado as an escort and observer ship for the test.  I am still
 concerned, however, that the Romulans may make a second attempt at the
 prototype.  Their recent use of a small fleet of ships in an attempt to
 disrupt Earth's past -- thwarted only by a Federation task force led by
 U.S.S. Gryphon -- leads me to believe that there are elements in the
 Romulan government that would like nothing better than to acquire this
 technology...

 Captain's Log, U.S.S. Coronado, Stardate 50655.8
 Captain James Whitmore, Commanding Officer

 Following her refit, starship U.S.S. Coronado has completed her final
 shakedown cruise, and has received new orders from Starfleet Command.

 We have been ordered to Starbase 247, there to observe the initial
 flight tests of a new prototype drive system mounted on an Oberth class
 science vessel.  Starfleet Command has informed me that the Romulans
 have shown an intense interest in this test; therefore, I have decided
 to escort the prototype drive ship to the nearby M1 nebula, the
 so-called "Crab Nebula."

 At more than 12 light-years in diameter, and offering both a pulsar and
 a strong source of X-rays, the nebula should be the perfect place to
 hide the test from possible encroaching Romulan ships.

 However, should the Romulans interfere, the Coronado shall not be found
 wanting.
