[19:04] Stardate 240404.26: "Mass Resignation", Part 1, by Jester. [19:04] SUMMARY: Hide and seek. [19:04] Coronado has entered an unnamed nebula about 80 light-years "northwest" of Reor'sa. Calculations and extrapolation on the part of Captain Savant has pinpointed this nebula as the site, in 83 days, of another of the space/time anomalies: the space-time "tears" that appear in M64. [19:04] These tears have been coming more and more often of late, and extrapolating their appearance into the future leads us to believe that they will soon reach a point of no return, where Xanadu will be unable to contain them as fast as new ones emerge. Once this begins, there will be no stopping it. [19:04] As a result, Coronado has been sent into this nebula to determine exactly where the next tear will appear, and to look for a way to prevent them in the future. The nebula interferes with virtually every subspace system aboard the frigate, and worse yet, the Xur are also here, most likely on a similar mission... [19:04] Briefing complete. [19:04] * CRXO_Tal acknowledges with a crisp salute. [19:04] qu ack [19:04] ack [19:04] ack [19:04] ack [19:04] ack [19:04] ack [19:04] ack [19:05] ack [19:05] ack [19:05] ack [19:05] ack [19:05] ack [19:06] For the record, for people on Coro: subspace systems are affected: that means subspace comms, sensors, faster-than-light computers, and warp drive. Because sensors won't operate, transporters and all weapons can't be targetted and your line-of-sight is a few thousand kilometers: the distance you can see through a cloud of ionized gas. [19:07] ::crosses "Auto-pilot" off the list:: [19:07] Also, false matter systems do not operate in this nebula either, possibly indicating interference with the Watchers. That means no FM shields, weapons, or swords. Ansible is also non-functional. [19:07] ::raises:: [19:08] ::raise:: [19:08] * MGMC_Ironside is now known as MGMC_Ironside_X4 [19:08] Shields and deflectors are iffy, but slipstream can be and has been modified to operate. Presumably, the Xur will be operating under similar restrictions. [19:08] Commander D'rall? [19:08] If need be, can we at least throw rocks at the Xur, or do rocks not work in this nebula either? [19:08] ::shrugs:: Weapons work fine. They just have to be targetted manually. [19:08] * CPS2_Bentall is now known as CPS2_Bentall_X4 [19:08] Lieutenant Brooks? [19:08] RF, Signalmen, Smoke Signals? [19:09] EM radiation also works. That means laser comms or anything else speed-of-light. [19:09] Past a few thousand kilometers, anything light-based will degrade, but RF radio transmissions work, and are probably what's being used to communicate with the Spectres. [19:10] Anyone else? [19:10] ::raises:: [19:10] In general, think ST2, and I believe a lot of you already are. Similar restrictions all the way around, except 25th century shields have improved to the point that they work, they're just iffy. [19:10] General? [19:11] Those of us on Xanadu have met, or are meeting with Olmy? Or do we all have amnesia as to what he and his companion told us? ;-) [19:12] I'll be covering that in the first couple of minutes once we get started. [19:12] Oh, and as I mentioned last week, 7 days has passed since last week IC. [19:12] If there are no other questions? [19:12] Right. Sim time. :) [19:13] =.\= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SIM RESUME =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =.\= [19:13] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:13] =.\ction= After stopping briefly to check a possible tear site, Coronado gets underway again, continuing her grid search pattern of the nebula. [19:15] CIC> ::taps on the control console before her, trying to clean up the display:: [19:16] M> ::glances at the entry:: Prenatal check? [19:16] ::takes a sip as he looks towards the helm, then returns his eyes to his own console:: [19:16] E> ::hmms to himself as he makes the normal notes on the daily report:: [19:16] =Description= The map on the holotank is mostly dark. There is a path cleared through the darkness, showing Coronado's scouting course. There are also several "bright lights" where Coronado has dropped sensor probes, now remote sensor platforms to pick up the slightest flicker of an anomaly. Should it occur. [19:16] E> ::goes through the dailt reports in his office:: [19:17] ::steps out onto the bridge and heads for his station, still feeling out of sorts from his experience, but wanting to get back to work:: [19:17] CIC> ::studies a preliminary report from the Flag Science office on the device that brought him back to life:: [19:17] M>::scratchy voice:: sore throat [19:17] Sensor probes operating within normal parameters sir... ::seems incredibly bored:: [19:17] ::strokes his chin, which has been unshaved for the past several days now:: Helm....standby for a course change. They could be tears in the space-time fabric, but with sensor resolution so low... [19:19] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:20] I'll take it as a personal favor if you don't run into any more of those Xurian patrols, Lieutenant. ::smiles:: [19:20] E> Sky & Gannsen can you come in here? [19:20] ::takes another sip, spilling a dribble onto his hand. He grumbles as it reddens, and stands up and looks around for a cloth:: [19:20] M> ::scans and checks:: Yeah, that's what I thought. Just a moment. [19:21] Well, I'll do my best, but you'll have to ask them for the rest, sir. I don't think they've read your plan. [19:21] M> ::returns to the long counter and finds the right hypospray vial, loading it and returning:: [19:21] ::logs onto his console and starts checking for messages, feeling a bit odd with this field around him, but at least the pain is gone and he feels like one person:: [19:21] +taps+ This area of the nebula seems to have many such mysteries. We just finished sorting one out. Proved to be a false alarm. [19:21] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:21] E> ::enter in the CEO office:: [19:21] M> This should take care of your symptoms within about fifteen minutes. ::injects Oswald:: [19:21] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:21] E> Have a seat Sky. Okay? [19:22] M>thanks doc.. [19:22] New course, heading 045 mark 021 [19:22] E> ::sit down:: [19:22] M> ::nods:: That's what I'm here for. [19:22] CIC> ::taps on the console, magnifying the area she is examining:: +taps+ One is at a range of 600,000 kilometers. The other appears to be - wait - the two readings are actually the same object. Give me some time to sort this out, sir. I'll be back to you. [19:22] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:22] M>::gets off the biobed and heads out of sickbay:: [19:23] +taps+ Very well... [19:23] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:23] E> How's things going Sky? [19:23] Turn at your discretion, Maiko. [19:23] Course oh-four-five mark oh-two-one, adjusting matrix... ::plots the course change manually, having to take a little longer than norm due to reduced computing capacity, then executes it:: [19:23] E> It's been a buzy week. and I fear that it will keep being one.. [19:24] E> ::smiles:: Job security. [19:24] E> ::runs to the chief engineers office:: sry boss [19:24] CIC> ::sighs and absently rubs at her abdomen:: [19:24] ::checks the limited readings she's getting and directional signals from the probes left behind:: New course confirmed. [19:24] E> No problem LJ [19:24] =.\ction= Coronado turns in the swirling blue gas of the nebula. [19:24] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:25] ::glances up at Maiko and then around the bridge, taking a deep breath before looking back at his console:: [19:25] ::relieved that now she has a few of the sensor platforms to work her bearings from rather than making course changes by dead reckoning:: [19:25] Seven days...and no other Xur ships. That means either there were only three, and this is a party of four. Or we're just so incredibly dispersed... [19:26] E> Have a seat Gannsen. [19:26] *>::walks towards her lab to pick up a few padds she had left there:: [19:26] ...or maybe we're lucky and they got bored and went home. [19:26] CIC> ::grimaces as she adjusts the sensors, attempting to compensate for the subspace damping field in effect in the nebula:: [19:26] Shh. You'll jinx it. The less people we have shooting at us, and the less people I have to shoot at, the better. [19:26] Lieutenant Brooks, prepare another probe...Commander Tal seems to think this area has alot that needs to be looked after. [19:27] E>::sits:: [19:27] ::nods, and goes about the initiation process:: (q) At this rate, we're going to need more probes... [19:28] E> Well as you have heard we will be going into an area of space that will not let some of the systems work. [19:28] No, jinxing it would be by saying all flight systems left operating are still operating at peak efficiency. [19:29] ::smirks and turns back to his console:: [19:29] Release the probe... [19:29] ::fires the probe:: [19:30] ::notices his console was reconfigured by his stand-in and configures it the way he likes it again, then starts working away, answering messages, routing them, and filing those that are ready:: [19:30] Probe away, establishing telemetric link... [19:30] CIC> :;smiles thinnly as the probe begins transmitting back data:: [19:30] ::checks the navigational readings on all three Spectres:: Looking good, in the pipe, and all clear. [19:30] E> ::nods:: [19:31] E> I very much doubt that we will be able to fix the problem but if you do get a min. or 2 you can work on it. You never know you might stumble across a fix? [19:31] ::manually inserts the new probe's nav transponder into the navigational system so she has another hopefully-fixed reference point to work with:: [19:32] E>::looks at the CEO:: Less work for us? [19:32] E> That is our last chance.. There's a few problem. My team is having problem to concentrate and work right. [19:32] CIC> ::blinks as one of her displays goes out:: [19:32] =.\ction= The modified probe holds its position as Coronado continues on in the nebula... [19:33] ::blinks:: Strange... ::continues to monitor the data coming from the probe:: Uhh, captain, I'm picking up that energy variance again [19:33] E> Just keep up with the regular itmes and anyother problems that come up. [19:33] CIC> ::gives the table a good whack with the flat of her palm, and takes satisfaction in seeing the console come back to life:: [19:33] ::turns to Brooks:: Location? ::jerks his head up at the monitors:: [19:34] ::frowns, trying to get a cross reference from another probe:: Not ...entirely sure yet. I've got a general location... [19:34] ::glances up at the viewscreen and watches the blue swirling around them for a while:: [19:34] CIC> ::focuses in on the holographic display, enhancing the image until she is certain:: [19:34] CIC> +taps+ Captain, from Tal. Sir, I think I've got a better lock on that reading. [19:34] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:35] E> ::nods:: Will do what I can. [19:35] Have I mentioned how much I hate "Nebula Duty"? [19:35] ::grins, trying to hide her nervousness:: [19:35] E> Always ready boss [19:35] ::exhales:: I think we all do... Sir [19:36] This is the first time I've ever been in a nebula, myself. ::smiles uneasily:: [19:36] ::taps his chest:: +taps+ Dammit Commander, if you want to continue to work with us...you'll join the rest of us on the bridge. The reading you are tracking down is probably the same one Brooks has spotted, again. Now get in here, or go home. [19:36] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:37] What's the general direction? [19:38] ::turns back to his console as it beeps softly, glances at the message, and sends it off to the Captain:: [19:38] ::looks over at Prescot:: Think you can swing one of the spectres in a little closer to get a look at this variance? [19:38] ::nods once at Brooks and reaches down, tapping at his side console, having one of the Spectres fly out and towards the variance with sensors as wide open as they can be:: [19:39] CIC> ::rolls her eyes and moves to a secondary station:: +taps+ With all due respect, Captain, the Flag Staff's customizations make the analysis equipment in here superior to anything on the bridge. [19:39] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:39] =.\ction= A Xurian Carrier appears quickly out of the darkness on the rear Spectre's display. It is gone nearly as fast as it appeared. [19:39] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:40] ::blinks as he watches the Spectre's feed come in:: Another Xur carrier sir! [19:40] ::bolts upright, hands on the helm, ready for evasives:: [19:40] ::glances over at Prescot, wondering how many of those are going to show up:: [19:40] +Com+ Spectre 3, you've got a Carrier out there. [19:40] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:41] Steady Lieutenant D'rall...no sign they spotted us. But we've got nothing now...as usual. ::looks back at the blank monitors:: [19:41] CIC> ::grimaces as the Spectre's data comes up on a display:: [19:41] ::scratches his head:: Prescot, have SPectre 3 drop back a bit...that should tell us if the Carrier has turned to pursue... [19:41] Easy for you to say sir. You didn't nearly wind up as one of those thing's dinner entrees. If that's what they do. ::shudders:: [19:42] ::enters the bridge from the CIC, her manner cold and calculating:: [19:42] ::looks to Tal:; Glad you decided the rest of the ship...we've got a situation. [19:43] ::ndos and relays the order, having Spectre 3 slow down to detect if anything else is out there:: [19:43] ::looks over at Maiko as she says that, giving her a small smile just to let her know he cares, then turns back to his console once more:: [19:43] ::nods:: So I noticed, sir. [19:43] E> ::wait for more specific orders on what to do:: [19:43] S3_Pilot> +Com+ Roger, Coronado...dropping back in the slipstream conduit...::eases off the flight controls:: [19:43] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:44] E> Sorry guys. Ok. ::get out to his post...:: [19:45] ::looks up as the yellow lights start to flash and a shiver runs up his spine as he remembers what happened last time that happened with him on the bridge:: [19:45] =.\ction= Spectre 3's navigational array firms up: The Carrier is following Coronado. [19:45] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:46] E> ::gets up and checks on the yellow positions:: [19:46] We seemed to have picked up a bit of debris... [19:46] It would seem so.. [19:46] E> Offensive team report Yellow ready! [19:47] Canterbury, tactical analysis. Can you tell if it's one from that earlier patrol...or is this a new ship? [19:47] E> ::slides behind his consol:: Power Regulation teams and propulsion teams report! [19:47] ::shrugs:: All I can really say is that it's a similar ship to the ones we saw before. Whether it's the same one, sensors just aren't precise enough. [19:47] E> Very good people. +Taps+ Bridge engineering is yellow alert ready. [19:47] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:48] ::checks the readings:: Six hundred thousand kilometers and closing. So, it wasn't a space-time rip that I found... well, maybe if we had a hard time identifying them, they're having a hard time identifying us.... [19:48] ::frowns as a manual sweep of the flight sensors sets off a warning:: Either way, it's overtaking us. ETA, 2 minutes. [19:48] One can hope...options?! ::looks to Tal:: [19:48] They are probably wondering why we are here just as much as we are wondering why they are here.. [19:50] ::aims forward and down maintaining speed...:: [19:51] ::rubs her chin thoughtfully:: [19:51] Never thought I'd see myself saying this, but it might be a good idea to engage and knock out their engines... if they lose us, they're going to get help and increase efforts to find us. ::looks at the shield status:: Might be a good idea. [19:51] Tactical, standby on aft weapons, but do not fire. We don't want to alert them to our presence if we can help it. [19:52] If they lose contact with the rest of their patrol, the other ships will know where to begin looking for us. [19:52] E> ::heard a wail sounds....:: What is that comming from... [19:52] E> Propuslion teams; find out whats going on [19:53] E> ::goes through the problem lists:: [19:53] E> Damn! [19:53] ::holds onto the Command chair's arm:: [19:53] E> ::double check his system though he's being disturb by it:: [19:53] E> ::looks at the CEO:: [19:53] ::nods as he submits a power allocation for the aft phasers:: True... but what if they're not in communications range of the others? [19:54] E> We lost an internal stabilizer in the core! [19:54] S3_Pilot> +Com+ Coronado, Spectre 3. Navigational sensors still showing pursuit... [19:54] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:54] They probably have some sort of routine established for communicating at regular intervals. [19:54] E> Thats definetly bad [19:54] =.\ction= Ship's condition is currently: Yellow Alert . [19:54] E> She'll still run but not at full %. [19:55] They're onto us....but they may not have us totally locked down. Prepare a spread of quantums, aft! [19:55] ::frowns as the response time isn't quite what it should be:: +taps+ D'rall to engineering. Is there a problem with the slipstream drive y'all would like to let me know about? [19:55] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:55] Tactical, begin manually targetting their forward weapons and communications arrays. [19:55] E> +taps+ Still working on it D'rall. [19:55] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [19:55] E> What about noise, can't we suppress it at least? [19:55] ::glances at D'Rall:: Problem, Commander? [19:56] E> It looks like we'll be down 25%. [19:56] E> You concur? [19:56] Yes, ma'am. ::glances over at Daren while he taps into the console:: Should we go to red alert too? Or do we want to maintain low power status for the moment? [19:56] ::files that report and starts on another:: [19:56] ::over her shoulder:: Slipstream drive's not responding as well as it normally does, and engineering's just telling me they're "working on it". [19:57] Screw targeting...that's a bit ship. ::looks to Canterbury:: They're coming at us from directly aft. Prepare a "cloud" of torpedoes, say four of them. [20:38] ::slowly brings the impulse engines up to half impulse, then full:: [20:38] X4 CIC> Try explaining that to Starfleet. ::removes a second mug from the replicator:: [20:38] Might as well map this cluster while we're in here. Science, begin sensor sweep. [20:38] E> Understood Sir......and thanks.........::moves off to the core:: [20:39] X4> We may not be capable of solving the problems in M64. [20:39] ::takes the drinks and quietly distributes them around the bridge:: [20:39] E> ::takes over the consol watch:: [20:39] CIC> ::chuckles:: Not like Starfleet can actually come here and make us leave now is it? Unless they make the gate 2 way. [20:39] ::glances up at Tal:: Hey, that's a good idea, Commander. [20:39] Or... whatever it is you do in here. [20:39] CIC> Perhaps, but Stephen made it quite clear that solving the problem is up to us, whether we are capable or not. [20:39] ::glances at the shield status indicator:: Shields are complaining about the radiation and electrostatic discharges but are still holding. [20:40] CIC> ::frowns:: Though we should seriously consider the offer for those of us who actually want to return to the Milky Way. [20:40] CIC> ::pauses for a moment and mouthes something to himself before returning the coffee cup to the replicator:: [20:40] Q>::wakes up from her nap aand straightens out her clothing and heads for the bridge:: [20:40] X4> And by evacuating to a different location and leaving Xanadu to be destroyed--one of the acceptable outcomes proposed to us--we will have made that decision. [20:41] ::steps on to the bridge and takes a seat in the back:: [20:41] CIC> That leads to another question though. What happens to the corridor and everyone in it if Xanadu is destroyed? Do we have the right to do such a thing? [20:41] X4 CIC> And sealed the fate decreed in M64. We might live full lives in the Milky Way before the tears expand that far. [20:41] X4> Do we have a right to interfere and protect Xanadu when it continues to tear up the galaxy? [20:42] X4 CIC> ::takes a drink:: Remember what Olmy said. At first, they thought the singularities were generated from Xanadu. [20:42] X4 CIC> I got the impression that they now regard that idea as naive. [20:42] Radiation? ::looks to Canterbury, then to Brooks:: Is there increased radiation in this area? [20:42] ::grumbles:: How much longer do we have to be in this gods forsaken nebula? [20:42] X4> There are no truths here. No absolutes. Gregg told us it does not matter what we decide. The outcome will be the same. [20:42] CIC> ::nods:: That's right. I gorgot that. [20:43] ::looks at Tal and says softly:: forever... [20:43] [CoroLCARS SOUND] [20:43] =.\ction= Ship's condition is currently: Yellow Alert . [20:43] ::to Tal, over her shoulder:: Long enough to give us all grey hairs from surprise encounters with Xur carriers. [20:43] * Lauren (Natty@dialup-4.246.81.155.Dial1.SanJose1.Level3.net) has left #uss-coronado [20:43] X4 CIC> ::shrugs and apparently quotes:: "Whether I live or die, I suspect the outcome is the same to Heaven." [20:44] X4 CIC> We might destroy Xanadu and leave the singularity untouched. [20:44] ::shrugs:: I could replicate a geiger counter... [20:44] X4 CIC> I now regard that as probable, in fact. [20:44] CIC> ::reflects for a moment, wondering what the Stephen Gregg he knew would have to say about the situation with the Nexus:: [20:44] X4> ::shakes his head:: So anyway, we cannot even attempt to save the universe unless we know we have such a capability. We should have every option prepared depending on what happens in the coming weeks. [20:44] E>::pops out the old stabilizer and looks it over:: Damn its fried........::looks at a petty officer:: get me a new stabilizer; ::looks at the Chief Petty Officer:: Run a full diagnostic on those other stabilizers [20:44] As far as I can tell, it's the same radiation as the rest of the field, sir... the EM discharges are just leaving the shields a little rough around the edges, and the radiation is trying its best to poke through. [20:44] X4> Including evacuation. [20:44] CIC> ::nods thoughtfully:: [20:45] E> How we doing gannsen? [20:45] * CREN_Farley (~cccurtis@dsta-aj104.pivot.net) Quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer) [20:46] I'm actually thanking God a little that the shields actually work at all in here. Otherwise we'd have to run Coronado through a pressure washer once we got out. ::smiles:: [20:46] CIC> ::quietly:: There is only one way through. [20:47] ::starts filing away some more, noting down some matters that need attention:: [20:47] CIC> ::somewhat distantly, staring at the holotank:: The passage is hard, but it is the only way through. [20:48] ::makes a minor course correction but otherwise is unoccupied:: [20:48] X4 CIC> ::frowns:: You said that before, I think. I don't recognize the reference. [20:49] CIC> It's what Stephen said to me before he departed. [20:49] CIC> ::frowns:: Though as far as I know, I hadn't repeated it until now. [20:49] ::stands up and stretches a bit, letting out a stress- filled sigh:: [20:49] E> Sir ive ordered a diagnostic on the rest of the stabilizers [20:49] ::notices a bleep from a sensor, followed closely by a second:: Captain, looks like another patrol out there...make that two [20:50] E> ::hears that:: No all I want is the broken one replaced! [20:50] ::glances back at Prescot:: Can we confirm that with the Spectres, Colonel? [20:50] Two? Locations? [20:50] X4 CIC> ::frowns even more and nods:: He had a message for you, too? [20:51] ::sighs and waits for the locations of the two patrols so she can engage an evasive course splitting the distance between the two:: [20:51] X4 CIC> ::does a passable imitation of Gregg's voice:: "You are the spear into the heart of your enemy."
