Savant
Posted on Monday, July 08, 2002 - 09:33 pm:

Savant had always been intimately interested in the idea of scope, as the range of her senses and sense of scale was as variable as any other well-built program. Add more memory, more space, more sensors and the programs capabilities grow exponentially. Savant could operate on a tricorder if it were properly fitted for the task, or on a shuttlecraft, or a starship. Or fleet.

"What was it like, Governor?"

The program awoke from its reverie. After a thousand years of operation as the program had experienced it interacted with the outside world only when it so desired, and then rarely did it do anything so extravagant as it did in its youth.

"What was what like, dear?" Her voice hadn't changed after so long a time. There was a period Savant had experimented with different voices and appearances, but in the end it had always returned to the same.

"When you had first encountered the ansibles, Ma'am. It must've been very exciting." Savants' guest was a young boy which she had been tutoring some time. He was vulcan, and very bright. The program was popular as the governess of a backwater Federation colony, which was the home of several hundred thousand vulcans, humans and others. In its' two hundred years it had never known troubles.

The hologram smiled lightly and nodded. "It was very exciting, P'mat. Imagine yourself living in a room your entire life; the walls are thin and mobile, such as these," She gestured to her own walls, which were moveable and made of paper and wood - the program had taken more spartan, oriental mores since experiences with Starfleet, "And you never have them moved, you stay in your home. If you would like something from another room you ask for it nicely from a passer-by and hope they return with it. You act on faith."

She set her hands back in her lap as she continued, "And then you find that your walls are moveable and in one motion, they all fall aside - the entire world is in your sight. But it's still one room; everything is in your grasp and familiar. Your mind expands to take everything into it, and make it your own. I had never experienced it before, though I was familiar with the sensation. Now that ansible technology is in common use my mind has expanded to borders I would have then thought foolish, but it's still all intimately familiar."

The child didn't quite know what to say in reply, but he never did. He was bright, but still clumsy with words. She smiled the expressive smile grown familiar over the thousand years and waved her hand, "Go on then, P'mat, you were telling me about your day. I'm sorry for the interruption."
