((If you have the Final Fantasy movie soundtrack, pop up "A Child Recalled".))

"...so here it is, in a ways, the eve of battle..."

Maiko's voice played quietly in the background as she sipped at the hot chocolate, listening to her own words to make sure she was certain in what she wanted committed to posterity.

She wore a slight smile at the thought that she was writing something as important as an autobiograpy... and yet she held a rather inconsequential position, much less of even less stature in M64. Arrogance on her part, she supposed, but amusing nonetheless.

Only moreso considering their situation. She wasn't one to mince numbers or water down the cold hard facts - if you were going to crash, you had to have and maintain a level head - which was probably why she was recording this latest entry with the intent to send the whole thing to Reor before they re-entered the nebula. Given the last fight with the Xur, it was looking likely that surviving the next battle could require intervention from higher powers.

"...hope that we will be successful against the Xur, but I'm thinking the price will be high..."

Technically, she supposed, she could cheat - the library in Xanadu could hold a copy of her autobiography for all she knew. Could also hold information telling of her death. Given the dead strewn about the city, she was counting more on the continuation of the theme, and not something all that bright and cheery.

"...feel like maybe I've been living on borrowed time, having almost died..."

Of course, that thought wasn't too cheery either, but it was the truth. Be it the higher power of a sentient hologram, an advanced species, or gods, she had survived quite a bit.

Maybe she hadn't really done all that much in her life, but it had certainly been a life well-spent to this point. Plus she had Zach to live for and look forward growing old with. In a ways, she felt somewhat lucky, being pleased with the life she had lived so far and knowing that if indeed she did die, it wouldn't be for naught. A little sad, perhaps, that there wouldn't be a daughter or son to continue her family line if they did loose this battle, but who would want to leave a galaxy of Borg and Xur to one's children? It was a sobering thought, and had been the one she had ended upon.

"...do not make it out alive, I want it to be known that I did everything I could, that I went out fighting. That I did my share and spilled my blood for kin and allies alike."

Okay. Maybe it wouldn't be such a valiant death. But it would mean something. Which was a lot better than the nothingness of the Xur...
