“Fog of War”
--------------------------------

The joined navigational sensors from Spectres 1 and 2 scouting ahead of Coronado to both port and starboard were clear as day. Through the hazy blue stellar gas three Xurian carriers. And then they were gone, going too quickly for Coronado and her escorts to keep an eye on them after having slowed to check out the energy variance that led them right to the ships. It was a form everyone on Coronado’s bridge had become familiar with, very familiar with over the past month. They were certainly out to provide problems for Xanadu for unknown reasons, and their presence here was unexpected so far in advance of an anomaly being present.

“Lieutenant, did I say something earlier about no surprises on this mission?” Commodore William Daren winced.

“I believe you did, sir.” Maiko sat at the helm console, piloting at a creep-along velocity of full impulse. The Xur ships were going a bit faster, which was a good thing because the large vessels continued on without noticing the Starfleet vessel. This time, at least.

“Well. It appears I lied.” Daren turned back to the map they had been referring to earlier. “I am sorry for that.”

Maiko grinned. “I’ll try not to hold it against you this time, sir.”

“Captain, since we’ve slowed, those probes you asked me for earlier are ready.” Lieutenant Brooks looks up from her Science station in the rear of the bridge.

“This is as good a place as any to drop one. If anything, it’ll inform us if those Xur head back in this direction.”

Moments later a sensor probe was released from Coronado’s Spectre Bay. The fighter launch area was being used to release the probes, which were going to remain stationary sensor emplacements in the nebula. Their data would be transmitted to Coronado, informing them should the anomaly open nearby. Even if the probe couldn’t directly “see” the anomaly open up in its limited range, it would very likely pick up the energy release as it swept across the probes scanning radius. There was still a very large nebula to be mapped, and many more probes to be released, and now with a confirmed Xurian presence in the nebula…things got just a little bit more stressful.

“Probe online, data-link holding stable.” Brooks reported.

Daren nodded. “Alright Ms. D’rall, plot us a strafing course to those carriers. I don’t see any reason to crowd them.” He wished there was a way to deploy an advanced group of scouts beyond the navigational function being performed by the three escorting fighters, but with the need for slipstream velocity, the Spectres would need to be within the conduit being generated by Coronado. He took a seat in the command chair and looked up at the feed again from all three fighters, they were once again showing nothing but dark blue swirling and mysterious gas. It felt like swimming blind in the deepest ocean ever made.

“Course plotted, sir.”

“Engage slipstream…”
