"Politics is the art of the possible."
Otto von Bismarck, 1867

---

SOMETIME IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS...

"Section 31 has always been unofficial at best. That's what's made it able to do the things that it does. You're asking me now to formalize my operations and turn them over to the purview of those - bureaucrats?"

Vice Admiral Brian Aldur shrugged sympathetically at his old colleague.

"Dev, what I'm asking you to do is what's best for Reor'sa. Let them think that they have control. You'll still have your freedom to do whatever the hell it is that I need you to do. As long as the Council thinks that they're in charge, they'll be appeased."

Rear Admiral Dev Wallace took a swig of his glass of scotch.

"Can't I just kill them and not worry about them at all?"

Aldur had a hearty laugh at that, finishing off his Guiness and heading for the door to Wallace's office.

"Letting them pretend that they're in control is easier than cleaning up the mess the bodies will leave. Besides, we need the bureaucrats to run the government, otherwise we'd be stuck with the job instead of getting real work done."

Wallace grunted his assent.

"True enough. All right, I'll get someone on it in the morning. G'night, Brian."

"Later, Dev."

As he watched his friend leave, Wallace couldn't help but think that his life would be a little easier if all the paper pushers would just get over themselves and let people who knew how to run things run them. He hated politics, but he'd play the games as long as it benefitted him and not a minute longer.
