===/\=== Somewhere in Zachery's mind as he lay in sickbay ===/\===

She was the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen. Zachery had been tending bar in a place call Costello's when she'd walked in and slid onto a bar stool. She had dark brown eyes, and her long black hair was braided and wrapped around her head like a crown. Fitting for someone that should only be treated like a Queen.

Not a touch of makeup adorned her features, but why should it? She didn't need any. She was perfect. Like one of those carved sculptures found in a museum somewhere.

Zachery walked over and asked for her order, filled it and then moved on to his other customers. He couldn't stop himself from glancing back at her though, and she was bound to notice.

She did notice and Zachery found himself blushing for the first time since he'd been in high school, and that was a *very* long time ago. He was 325 years old now. Impossibly old by most humanoid standards, but still young for an El Aurian.

Zachery continued his work, refilling drinks and taking more orders. The place started to thin out, and eventually Zach glanced up from putting the glasses in the washer and realized that everyone was gone. Everyone but her.

He noticed her glass was empty and automatically asked if she wanted a refill. She'd told him yes...on one condition. She wanted him to join her for a drink.

That was the first of many nights spent in like manner. Every Friday night she would come in. She would order a drink and nurse it until everybody left, and then Zachery would join her and they would talk for hours on end.

After about 6 months he finally worked up the courage to ask her out on a real date and to his delight she'd accepted. From that night on time seemed to stand still whenever they were together.

2 years later he'd asked her to marry him, and they began their life together as husband and wife. He had joined Starfleet Academy and spent his days in class and his nights studying and tending bar.

After 3 years he graduated, 10th in his class, but he didn't really bother about that. He only wanted to be a good officer, and to spend the rest of his time with her.

The years went by and they shared each one together, their love only growing stronger over time. People would watch them walking along together, still holding hands, and wonder what sort of magic they had that seemed to keep them young and in love.

After a while, time became the enemy for Zachery though as he watched her hair start to turn grey, and her face begin to grow laugh lines. To him she was still young and beautiful though, because he only saw her with his heart.

The end was inevitable though, and it came much too soon for Zach's liking. Only 60 years? That was like a drop in a bucket to him, but it was all he was allowed.

She left him in the night, while they were sleeping. She was cradled close in his arms and she felt cold for some reason. Zachery pulled her closer and drew the blankets up further, but it didn't help.

He opened his eyes and looked at her...and he knew. She was gone. He held her close and kissed her now cold lips that once had been so warm and inviting and whispered one last time in her ear, "I love you my Eveline." Then he closed his eyes...and wept.

Zachery was snapped out of his thoughts when a voice spoke to him. "My name's not Eveline. I'm a doctor and I'm going to fix your eyes now."

It was a decidedly male voice, and it held a touch of amusement in it. He had no idea why Zachery had said those words. He wasn't a mind reader. He was only a doctor.

Zachery nodded. "Go ahead." he said quietly, then sighed deeply as his mind remembered where he was and what he was doing there.

One small part of him even wished they would simply let him be so he could go back to thoughts of Eveline. Bittersweet memories, and yet they were precious. As precious as time itself.

Time. That's what this was all about, wasn't it? They didn't belong in this time, and yet there were here. Eveline didn't belong in his time, and yet he wished with all his heart she could.
