It was with a relief that Maiko powered down the engines to standby. The polar approach hadn't been as peaceful as she hoped - then again, there probably wasn't a safe way to descend towards the planet given a meteor or asteroid could just as easily fall into a gradually decaying orbit of the world as much as one could strike near head on, straight down through the atmosphere. Despite the back-seat driving from the new science officer, it quite simply had been the quickest way to get low enough to make any further shots from the orbiting satellites dangerous. It was a safe bet that the satellites wouldn't fire if it meant they would end up doing more damage than destroying the meteor would do. The landscape outside the window certainly looked peaceful enough. Nothing reminded her of Churchill Downs while landing, which was a good thing. Better yet, if the Frants here were as low technology as they had appeared to be from Coronado, how much of a threat could they pose to the away team? Securing the flight systems, she joined the others at the shuttle's hatch, securing a phaser for herself only after making sure it was set to light stun, and then a tricorder. Undoubtedly she would not likely need the phaser (nor did she like to think of the fact her phaser marksmanship was still sub-par or the fact that her spinal bypass would make any physical combat difficult) but it felt like a prudent measure given the lack of security officers on the away team. *Coronado,* she thought, *where you learn to hope for the best but plan for the worst.* --- Helm Report, SD 240310.27 --- USS Coronado holding high polar orbit over the Frant homeworld. Flight systems within nominal performance ranges. |
