Lt. SG Maiko D'rall
Posted on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 03:04 am:

The last thing she saw was the fibers coming at her. After that, darkness.

And then, the darkness moved. Lightened to greys. Details began to return to her - something, hearing. Sensation, something firm yet giving against her back. The noise resolved to a hum, and a murmur. A voice.

Her mind, still reeling, finally began to attach meaning to the noises. The hum she heard sounded like sickbay. The voice - it was Doc Reed...

"...hear me Belle?"

Maiko finally managed to open her eyes - it felt as if they had been closed forever. There he was, looking over her. Sickbay indeed. But something wrong.

"I hear you Doc... we made it? Did I pull the ship out of the dive?" Maiko asked eagerly.

"I don't know Belle." A beat. "Look, there's something you need to..."

"Need to do, sure. Like get back up there. I sure hope I wasn't down for long." And with that, she tried to sit up. And nothing happened. Her legs wouldn't move to swing over the edge of the bed.

"Doc, you don't need a forcefield, I'm fine." She glared at the Doc who merely frowned.

"Maiko, look at your hands."

Lifting her head, she managed to barely see her arms, which were trembling violently. To her, she felt as if they were holding rock steady. She focused on them to calm the trembling, but only felt a rising panic as her arms and hands continued to tremble. "Doc...."

"Bel- Maiko... Savant beamed you down here as fast as she could... you almost didn't make it. In order to.. keep you alive, I had to remove parts of your nervous system... the trembling is a byproduct of some of the damage done, and over time it might heal. With your mixed physiology, it's hard to tell."

Maiko sighed in relief. Some drugs, maybe some therapy, and she would be good as new - but Reed still didn't look happy. "There's... more?"

"I'm afraid some of the things I had to remove... includes part of your spinal cord. Maiko... you're paralyzed from the waist down."

What he said afterwards simply didn't register with her. She could live without painting for a few days - or even weeks... but now, to be denied the simple act of walking... no longer would she be able to enjoy her morning jog... to feel the rudder pedals beneath her feet flying in a plane... she was going to spend the rest of her life in a chair...

Reed finished up, not really able to offer the helmswoman any condolances as she slipped into shock, the tears - one of millions to come - sliding down the sides of her face.

-- HELM REPORT --

(Submitted by Lt. JG Stackpole)

Helm operations onboard Coronado remain well within performance tolerances despite the loss of the main bridge helm station. Coronado has re-entered Xanadu after the surrender of the subverted scientists and is holding position. Unfortunately, the flight department is short one person, and scheduling has been shifted to cover the gap in coverage.
