Third Times the Charm?
----------------------

Captain William Daren slipped silently into his quarters on Deck 4. His mind felt like it had been going in circles for a week, and in fact it had. It all started with the Hecht radiation discovered in the binary star system L036/L037 as an undeniable lure to anyone using a dilithium-based power generator, and in M64 that meant only the Federation ships like Coronado. Deep amongst the highly reactive asteroids in the binary system a hidden Jjaro tower waited with vital information. Retrieving this information, and decoding it was what brought them all to this point, and Daren slumped down on the couch near the large cinematic window looking out at the foreign stars of M64. Sadly they were starting to look more and more familiar. He was getting too used to this.

“Icarian Rum, warm.” The nearby replicator responded with a slight whirr, and he reached for the glass of amber peacefulness while still on the couch.

The sensation that came with living the same events numerous times was a very difficult one to explain. One the one hand, it was the ultimate déjà vu. The first time it happened, he could distinctly remember entering the system, proceeding through to the asteroid with the Jjaro Tower, and every order he gave on retrieving the data. It was as if he tripped down a flight of stairs and had to climb them all over again. On the other hand, it was a horrifying ordeal. Daren had always been the kind of man to make a decision and not dwell on it once it was made, but the way the events of the past few days…the past few weeks had been looping, he was as were others forced to look right into the heart of the various decisions that it was his job to make on a daily basis. This, however, was only minimally troublesome to him.

Slowly he sipped at the drink; the warm elixir seemed slowly seeped into him. More troublesome to him was the ever-increasing “subversion” incidents coming to pass. Something had been reaching out to grab members of his crew, and his colleagues, in order to use them for their own purpose whatever it maybe. He suspected very possibly the Xur to be behind this for he had seen evidence with his own eyes of how they had subverted entire starships to their will. But he wasn’t totally sure if even that felt right. Something was going on, something that was bigger then what he could see before him. Looking out at the stars of M64 again, he felt suddenly alone.

The latest person to be subverted had been General Ironside of the Flag Staff, but before that it had been his very own Executive Officer, Commander Velorna Tal. He had been blind-sighted at her subversion. She was so close to him, so close to the operations of the vessel he commanded, there was so much at risk. Her subversion had resulted in her death in one of the previous loops. He wasn’t sure if he could risk her subversion again. She had access codes to nearly as much of the ship as he did. He finished the remaining rum in one large mouthful and moved to the bedroom. He would have a talk with Commander Tal in the morning and get an update on her status, no matter how she felt he would need to keep a close watch on her…
