When the race was reduced to a set of simple and basic rules it turned to her favor. It was a computer simulation, played out and opened-ended, but still very much an artificial creation, and she'd created and worked with systems far more complex for the past 15 years. It was her forte, her absolute area of specialization, and she didn't think there was anyone better at it. Kelaka had just been destroyed and Tal was smiling cooly into the Wraith's main display. Up until that point, Kari had lingering doubts about joining the wraith team. She still maintained that if she'd set out in a spectre with Farley they would be in an even better position right now. Looking at Tal, however, she realized how serious the Romulan was about winning, and she suddenly felt sorry for anyone not on the wraith. Kari had her own motivations for competing. While winning such a large race would give the victor a considerable amount of bragging points, she was more concerned with what a select few thought of her performance. She'd been the 'acting' CO of the Cerberus for nearly four weeks now, and she was starting to seriously question when a change in status would come. The absence of the ship didn't help her feelings, either - it had gone back to Reorsa shortly after the end of battle to return the repair teams, while Kari had stayed behind for the negotiations with the Ryla. She was hoping that a good finish in the race would reinforce her position and prove her abilities to function outside of intelligence. Meanwhile, the comm lines were ablaze with indignation, but it really didn't matter. Kelaka hadn't been a factor in the race, at least not to their team, and any hurt feelings could be fixed later. If anything, their destruction was more an issue to the other defender teams, who now had one less ally in the back of the pack to protect them against the Rylans. For the wraith, though, the only ship that presented a significant problem was the Razorfang currently drifting in the lead, and she already had a plan to neutralize it. Wayne made his way onto the bridge from the rear of the craft. She didn't know where he went, but he reported that the Farley's ingenious modifications to the craft were holding up nicely, and that even more speed was possible, if it was needed. Tal and Kari shared a smile. -=-=-=- Genesis 4:1-15 KJV 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 4:2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 4:6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; 4:12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 4:13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. |
