To: Rear Admiral Lora Kor and Staff Whitestone “Defenders” TG 85.3 From: Captain William Daren USS Coronado, Commanding First Contact Report Species: Ryla Area of Contact: L042 System, Grid 008, M64 Galaxy Class M Planet Physical Description: The Ryla are a four-legged race with a long neck and a wide, flat face. Their stature is very similar to that of the Centaurs of Earth mythology, but their build is not as hefty as a horses. They resemble a smaller, more rapidly moving hoofed creature like a gazelle. They appear extremely intelligent and exude facial features similar to that of humanoids. Contact Summary: When Coronado first entered system L042 it was evading several ships that had begun to pursue her. It was clear, that we had stumbled into a war zone. A battleground between two races, each unknown to the Federation, was in full tilt. We succeeded in sending a last-ditch communication to convince those in the area that we were not our enemy. I believe this to be due to our close proximity to the Class M world that appears to be the Rylan home world. Annas, the Rylan representative opened communications with us. She indicated that she recognized us as the ‘Sharro’, and wondered if we had indeed returned. I immediately took the race Sharro for Jjarro. I later learned others listening in as well had made the same assumption. I formerly requested a visual conference with Annas so that we can greater explain ourselves, without the cumbersome of the communications signals. This proposal was promptly accepted when I along with my Executive Officer, Chief Tactical Officer, Helmsman, and Chief of Operations were transported to an unknown location. This location was later shown to be one of the carriers in the vicinity of the planet. For my diplomatic team, it had the appearance of a dark room with illuminated circle surrounding us. Chanting could be heard in the darkness not far away. This was where Annas greeted us with her physical presence for the first time and introduced herself with her full title: “Protector of the Frontier, Shield of the Faith”. The standard greeting appears to be a “touch” of the forehead. Annas respectfully asked to greet me in this fashion. The greeting also seemed to serve a secondary purpose of determining if we were in fact Sharro. It did not take long before Annas was able to see that we lacked the power of the Sharro. She herself seemed boggled by the possibility that we could resemble the Sharro in form and yet not have “the touch”. I decided to not follow this up immediately, and to instead explain to Annas that we were aware of the race known as the Sharro, knew of their power, and that they resembled humans. I decided this was best for the time considering we were still on shaky ground. My intention being not to show the Ryla that we were haphazard fools. I mentioned the Sharro facility Xanadu to which she had no knowledge of. This initially puzzled me. How was it exactly that one could know of the Sharro and not Xanadu? Annas pushed the issue at first, however. She was intent on knowing how we could not be the Sharro. Almost nothing I seemed to offer her in this regard seemed to meet with her approval. She left several times to speak with “others of the faith”. At these moments the surrounding chanting quieted and silenced. It was clear we were being observed. I made several attempts to begin an informational exchange with Annas. She seemed to have knowledge of the Jjaro that we do not. She was hesitant to partake in my offer at first, but then did give us information regarding the war we appeared to stumble into. The Ryla are at war with a race known as Xur. The Xur infect others with what the Ryla refer to as the “tar na zee” in order to attack others. It was fairly evident that this was the subversion technique displayed on the Defiant-class Chimaera used to “kill” the crew. Shortly after this Annas disappeared again, for much longer. We were left in the dark for sometime. Apparently hospitality differs a great deal between our two cultures, but I settled my team and we awaited her return. We were informed that the Xur had returned, ambushed the area, and that Coronado had aided somewhat in repelling the invaders. This, it seemed, was finally what convinced Annas and her fellow followers of the faith that we were no threat and wished peaceful relations. We were returned to Coronado to pick up the pieces of the battle. Outlook for future contact and relations: The Ryla, with their knowledge of the Jjaro, is certainly a race we need to be allied with in some fashion. They appear to posses knowledge that can aid us in our struggles for understanding the many mysteries of the M64 galaxy. I would suggest a series of several informational exchanges over the coming weeks, and perhaps even the addition of a full Federation Diplomatic team. We have yet to make formal contact with the Xur, but the possibility has not been pushed aside. This remains a key diplomatic task for pursuit.
