A flash of light, and he was gone. Incinerated. Atomized.

Maybe twenty seconds had elapsed from the first sign of trouble until the Admiral's body had been reduced to nothing more than two size 10 boot imprints burned into the carpet. The railing nearby was also badly burned from the stream of coherent energy that had flash-fried Tebrun Lora-Kor.

Though Ensign Kingswell of the science department had already run such a replay simulation - and had discovered some interesting bits of information in the process. But she still had a need to witness the event for herself, especially considering she had not even been on the ship at the time of the accident.

Given special leave to gather her personal effects, Tal had been in the Great Library of Alexandria at the time of her former captain's apparent demise. As first officer, it was her duty to write the report Captain Daren would be forced to send to Admiral Aldur regarding Lora Kor's untimely demise, and she wanted to make sure she had all the facts straight. Admiral Aldur would want to know everything that had... happened....

Her thoughts trailed off when she thought of Aldur. Why?

The Romulan replayed the holorecording right up until the moment that Lora Kor vanished. There was the Admiral, his body encased in lightning. His face seemed almost serene, as if he had not yet realized that he was dying. And there it was. There, over the admiral's head, was some sort of "lightning sphere". At least, it was half of a sphere.

"Computer, take image of the object located above Admiral Kor's head and isolate."

The holdeck faded to black with yellow gridlines except for the glowing ball of energy. Something about it haunted her.

"Computer, replicate the image of the sphere, mirror, and attach to the current image to complete the sphere."

The composite wasn't perfect, but it was complete enough to spark something within the recesses of Tal's vast memory. Something she had read long ago, an unusal set of reports that had crossed her desk when she was working at the Intelligence post on Vulcan.

"Computer, provide library terminal. Access Coronado crew and officer logs, official and personal, for Stardate 240011.09 through Stardate 240101.01. Check for accounts of energy spheres and unusual crew appearances and disapperances. Also, check any logs by Vice Admiral Brian Aldur that were filed during that serach period."

Something about Aldur and the energy sphere had formed a tennuous, thread-like connection in her mind. Now all she had to do was find where the threads would lead and then weave them together.
