Maiko lay on her bunk staring at the ceiling of her quarters. A quick check of the chrono proved what she felt internally - that it was still early. For the first time in a while, suddenly a duty shift on the bridge wasn't something she was looking forward to. Something had to give - or actually, had already given. Going head to head against the new XO certainly hadn't worked, and continuing to do that would be like purposely flying into a quantum filament repeatedly. Complaining to the Captain wouldn't get her much of anywhere. She had managed to cool her jets long enough to realize that going to the captain could make things even worse for her - but she still kept it as an option. In the battle of wills, Maiko's stubborn streak had almost always won the day, but here was a person who could match her blow for blow in that arena. Thinking of the problems as a battle brought a quote to her mind, one she couldn't place immediately until her gaze fell upon the printed hardbound book on the nightstand, its cover depicting two bands of people - one ragged, other trim and decked out in jumpsuits. "Information is ammunition," she finally said outloud, her mouth a bit fuzzy from sleep. Adam Steiner, the lead holocharacter in the drama was fond of saying that to the character she played, and it not only applied to the situations on the holodeck, but perhaps in real life as well. A few minutes later she was seated at the computer terminal in her quarters, still dressed in baggy sweats and a t-shirt with "OUTTA MY WAY" emblazoned across the front, pouring over the one area of Commander Tal's record she had access to - her flight performance summaries and ratings. It was only natural that the chief flight officer onboard would review a new officer's flight qualifications and experience, especially in light of the recently-completed flight challenge. The more she read, the more she realized just how hopeless it would be to go up against Commander Tal - in fact, no contest at all. With much skill and experience Maiko could sum herself up under, until now she had been the best pilot available onboard, with Rachel and Ed just slightly behind her. Tal, however, seemed to be in a class of her own. Maiko turned off the monitor and headed for the sonic shower, tossing her bedclothes aside. As much as she wanted to put Tal in her place and get the commander off her back, reality had just told her to back off. Resigned, she put her problems aside and out of immediate thought and concentrated on making as much of her day enjoyable as it could be before having to submit to Coro's new backseat driver. |
