Lieutenant Major Shar
Posted on Sunday, April 20, 2003 - 12:44 am:

Shar shook his head in denial. He couldn't believe it. His blinding headaches were gone and so was, at least temporarily, his flight status.

For some reason his sinuses and eyes flared up while in the cockpit of a spectre and this had caused severe headaches. Ultimately the doctor determined it was being caused by a celular breakdown. What the breakdown was caused by was yet to be determined but the doctor was positive it would not reoccur. The doctor fixed it but ordered Shar off the flight lines until further notice.

Major Prescot had assigned him to a "ground" unit until the doctor cleared him for flight. Due to his recent inactivity he was summarily assigned as a regular marine. He was a Flight Leader but apparently he couldn't be trusted to lead men in ground combat. The other marines in his squad thought that odd but held their tongues.

Shar was off duty now and in his quarters. He would report to duty in his new assignement in a couple of days but for now he was "resting". The only way he knew how to rest was to research the history of war. He was currently on the History of War on Earth.

He had originally found it interesting that the humans had such a rich history in warfare. As he read further though he began to wonder how the human race had even survived long enough to have first contact with the Vulcans.

They had fought in literally hundreds upon hundreds of conflicts as far back as they had kept written history. In the 20 and 21 centuries they had fought three world wars.

Millions had been killed in the conflicts. Countless atrocities had been performed during those wars by all sides. Countless families had been destroyed by the wars. And in nearly every case the wars were started by some minor idiotic issue that could have been settled by sitting down and talking.

Yet here the humans were, about four hundred years after first contact, exploring the universe and taking the Vulcans and Andorans and numerous other races wiith them.

He admired their tenacity to keep going through thick and thin and never giving up, never surrendering.

Shar finally concluded in his own mind that had the Vulcans landed on earth with anything other then peaceful intentions, the Vulcans most likely would have been wiped from existence. Shar had to wonder what the history of the human race would have been like had they made first contact with an alien race before their First World War.

Turning off the console he went and lay down on his bed and slowly fell asleep, his thoughts still on the possibilities of the human race had they firgured out how to live without war.
