Rear Admiral Dev Wallace fidgeted as he sat behind the long wooden table that had been erected in the center of Reunion Square. All around him was destruction and death. He had seen so much of both in his time. But even in the midst of it all, he saw Life continuing. Right before him, seated at a similar table to his own, was a small woman holding a child. He wondered why she looked so familiar and then realized that he had served with the young woman’s mother over twenty five years before. He had, in fact, demoted her mother briefly for insubordination when Sandra Nouveau had served under him during his short tenure as captain of the starship Pegasus. “She can’t be more than 21, 22,” Wallace muttered. “What the hell is she doing with a kid?” His personal aide – his own daughter, Commander Velorna Tal – handed him a padd and smiled her mysterious smile. “Not her child, sir. That’s the Tlaloco baby.” A nod from the admiral indicated his understanding as he read over the files presented to him. “Smith seems to know his stuff. This is one of the best legal briefs I’ve ever seen as a presiding officer at a court martial.” “Dad, it’s the only legal brief you’ve ever seen as a presiding officer of a court martial.” Wallace grinned and waggled a finger at her. “It’s not polite to talk back to your elders, kiddo. Thought I’d raised you better than that.” A grin almost as sly as her adopted father’s played across the Romulan officer’s features. “You did. But I think you old Coronado types are starting to rub off on me.” Her father snorted. “Can we get this over with? Where the hell is the defendant? And Smith? And the rest of the judicial panel?” “Commander Tlaloco is still aboard Coronado. Commander Smith is conferring with Captain Daren and Admiral Kor. I believe they’re all over with Charlie Theron right now. Should be here in half an hour or so.” Wallace nodded and then beckoned the woman with the Tlaloco child over. He wanted to see for himself what the fuss was all about. ========== Christian D. Clem '01,.aka Aggie Cmdr. J. Darek Smith, Executive Officer U.S.S.
