It was almost time. Computations complete, drive answering ready in all respects to the helm board and in engineering, and a helmsman who fled home once before ready to do so again, this time not as a refugee but as a rising star.

She had already said her goodbyes to her father after making sure he had a place to stay while he built a new home - right on top of the foundation of their old home. The loss of Melissa saddened them both, but the time had come for both father and daughter to move on; he to helping restore Reor'sa to its pre-occupation state, she back to the Coronado and her second family.

It had been the realization of that - that she no longer saw the Coronado as just a ship, but a home, and her comrades as family - that finally broke the ongoing debate in her head of whether to stay and help or go and serve. The realization that there were other worlds that would need help then firmly made up her mind.

A few messages to the surface took care of the bulk of her affairs; Maiko Air was quietly closed down, the remains of the hangar and plane declared free for salvage. Harry Burgess had been quite unhappy at having one of his 'proteges' as he put it leave, but Maiko remained firm.

Burgess had been a thorn in her side, a 'chaperone' when she flew for profit, ensuring that the business end of the company ran well; unfortunately, the man was a slug who tried several times to get her to ship illegal cargo, or worse, extra cargo beyond the plane's performance. There had been faceoffs, and in every case she had won - especially after she dumped one rather highly illegal load into the mountains.

He had argued for almost an hour over the message nets, saying they could rebuild the plane, that she was the best pilot on Reor'sa, that they could go out and perhaps make the transition to shuttles, even trying to convince her that Reor'sa needed her.

In the end, her answer was a firm no. The hangar, the plane, her family's home - and her mother - all lost, and to Maiko it was now simply easier to leave Reor'sa. Everything she needed, owned, and her career were all onboard the Coronado, for better or for worse. Now if only Ensign Kerman were as easy to deal with as Burgess...

The ship completed one more orbit of many, with only a several more left before they were due to depart. Spotting Commander Smith leaving the bridge, she grinned, her face taking on a slightly tyrannical look.

After all, there was still plenty of time while in orbit to work on the article...

-- HELM REPORT FOLLOWS --

Status: Helm answers ready in all respects. Engineering reported slipstream drive ready for use at commanding officer's discretion at 1000 hours on SD 240301.14. All calculations for slipstream have been computed and locked into the guidance matrix for transit to Micropolis.

All shuttles previously involved in SAR or supply aid have been recalled and are onboard. In addition, Lt. JG Stackpole has returned to duty from medical leave.

Departmental Bulletins:

o) In light of the problems faced during shuttle SAR missions on Reor'sa, I've put together a simulation based on her experience on Reor'sa; all qualified shuttle pilots expecting future SAR duty are encouraged to use the simulation for practice. - Maiko

o) A reminder: Helmspeople who feel the slightest bit ill should immediately report to Sickbay. Myself and Lieutenant Stackpole both apparently caught the Reor'san Flu - how I'm not sure - so please, if you feel lightheaded, nauseated, and feverish, get to sickbay before you puke all over the helm. (On that note, engineering has replaced the damaged main bridge helm console.) - Maiko

o) Re: Reminder: For that matter, if you feel that ill, don't report for duty, report to sickbay. ;) - Rachel

o) Departmental briefing regarding the upcoming Micropolis mission for alpha and beta shift helmspeople will be held after the senior staff meeting (check your schedules for the time); Beta shift officers will be responsible for briefing the gamma shift officers regarding this mission. - Maiko

[[If you don't understand the last line of the log, read the aftersim log from the 6th, and once it's up, the 20th ;) As for the Reor'san flu, keep in mind Maiko and the away teams were all using shuttles. wouldn't surprise me if fate just picked a bad time for the local nasty bug to develop a new strain that got brought up on the shuttles :-)

Musical Inspiration: "Leaving of Liverpool" by the Gaelic Storm, which will be up for a bit at http://members.aol.com/CptFarrell/recent/leaving_of_liverpool.mp3

Most of you have probably heard them; they were the steerage band in Titanic :-) Their CD's pretty good too. Altered lyrics from the song that fit the situation a bit better follow ;) ]]

Fare thee well to Fisher's Landing and
Morgaine River, fare thee well
Well I am bound for other planets now
But I know that I'll return someday

Chorus:
So fare thee well, my loyal home
When I return united we will be
It's not the leavin' of Reor'sa that grieves me
But my people when I think of yee

I have signed on the Defender Starship
Coronado is her name
And Daren is the Captain of her
And they say she's of warpin' fame

Chorus

Though I have sailed with this Daren once before
And I think that I know him right well
For if a man is a 'fleeter, he can get along
If not, he's in a floatin' hell

Chorus

The sun is on the horizon
And I wish that I could remain
Because I know it will be some long, long time
Before I see you again

Chorus x3
