Captain Daren
Posted on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 09:56 pm:

Sometime earlier…

Daren had been carrying around the PADD in his hands for hours. Not many under his command noticed it, and if they had, they weren’t going to mention it. He would switch it from his right hand to his left, jot down a few notes, tuck it back under his arm, and continue on his way. It was only a few hours later when Daren finally finished his letter home:

To: Lara Daren, Station Deep Space Nine, Milky Way Galaxy
From: William Daren, USS Coronado, M64 Galaxy

Mom.

My God how I’ve missed you. I can only image your sorrow when you received official word of my disappearance. Starfleet took your only husband away from you so many years ago, and now it had taken your son. I stand in defiance of that piece of history repeating itself, Mother. I am alive, I am well, and I’ve been waiting so long to be able to communicate this fact to you.

I remember the stories about how you would never be caught dead living on a space station in the middle of nowhere and so far from the rest of the Federation and Earth. And here I am living in the remotest of places and I know exactly why you were so dead against it. We stumbled upon something here and our situation is difficult, but we are all surviving.

There is so much I need to tell you; too much of my life has passed by out here that you couldn’t be present for. Shortly after disappearing I was made Executive Officer and now I’m a Captain of all things. The Admiralty saw fit to bestow upon me the singular responsibility of commanding starship and crew in this far off place. You have no idea how much I would have wanted you by my side to see me take that immense weight and hoist it high about my head.

I doubt I will be able to send messages like this regularly, just know that I am here, alive, and I love you. I imagine this moment is what hell is like: Being stuck in a place and wanting desperately to be somewhere else. You’ve never known me to instill false-hope Mother, so listen well to what I have to say next:

I will see you soon.

Signed,
Your very determined, hard-nosed, strong, quiet, brooding son:
Captain William Daren, USS Coronado, M64 Galaxy

Captain William Daren
Commanding Officer (IC)
USS Coronado NCC-97901
Sim Executive Officer
