"Daren to Commander Smith and Doctor Reed," Reed's communicator suddenly chirped. Reed glanced down at it, a bit surprised. "I'd like you both present in my ready room one our from now. We have a 'Marine' issue to discuss, gentlemen. Daren out." Reed groaned inwardly. It didn't take a great amount of imagination to realize what this was all about. Some uppity Marine, ostensibly with higher clout that Reed, had gotten upset that Reed had erased Shar's orders for latrine duty. How tragic. Muttering to himself, Reed sat forward in his chair, glancing at his PADD. He first brought up Coronado's own Marine roster, looking for the man in charge. Thomas Wayne. Reed accessed the man's personnel file and skimmed through it. He smirked at one point, although had anyone been privy to what he was smirking about and not his reason for doing so, they would have thought him sadistic. The account of Wayne's insubordination concerning the matter of his brother was all Reed needed in order to know that Wayne had not been the one whose toes he'd stepped on. Someone higher, then. Colonel Jeremy Ironside. He similarly pulled up the Colonel's data file and skimmed through it. "He emerged with almost a schizoid personality disorder, experiencing little to no emotion of any kind." Bingo. It was Ironside all right. A Colonel, a Regiment Commander, and a Marine -- just the kind of person that would hate being overruled by a Chief Medical Officer. Reed took some measure of satisfaction in that. Unfortunately, there wasn't a very clear definition between the Marine's chain of command and Starfleet medical personnel. On the one hand, the Marines answer only to the ship's resident marine leader aboard a starship, who in turn answers only to the captain. The CMO, on the other hand, has complete medical authority over the whole ship. Reed personally chose to interpret that to mean that, so long as he was justified, he could damn well countermand any order that went against one of his prognoses. After all, who the hell was a Marine to overrule a doctor where medical issues were concerned? They were trained to kill, not to heal. Let them stick to what they do, and let the Medical personnel do what they signed up for. Reed shook his head slowly. Bureaucracy. Some bigwig gets the idea that they're important enough to know what's best for everybody else, and then gets their shorts in a bunch when they get taken down a few pegs. "Only Doctors get to have that attitude," Reed murmured aloud. "That's what we're trained to know." Reed took a deep breath and leaned back again. All right, fine. So the Captain wanted to see him in an hour. So what? This wasn't any different (it was actually probably more mundane) than the whole incident with Chappy. And he had been right then, too. Chappy, of course, was too big to admit that right off, so she just left him confined for a few days anyway. If this Marine -- through the Captain -- wanted to play hardball, then hardball is what he would get. Leaning forward once more, Reed began pulling up data on Shar, his injuries, past incidents, and Andorians in general. Not only would he stand this Marine bastard up, he'd take him down a few pegs while doing it. ~~~ ---------- TO: Captain Daren, William Commanding Officer U.S.S. Coronado FROM: Doctor Reed, Alec Chief Medical Officer U.S.S. Coronado RE: Department Status Report DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL -------------------- Resident Physician Dyson, Lauren Doctor Dyson, after graciously completing a set of vital inventory reports requiring her authorization, finally took the opportunity to go off duty, having been awake for two days solid. Had she not taken some time for herself soon, I was prepared to recommend and then order her to do so. She has performed admirably during this crisis and deserves the rest. DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT OVERVIEW ----------------------------- All equipment intact and operating normally. DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT REQUESTS ----------------------------- None currently. CASUALTIES/PATIENTS ------------------- Lt. Major Thirishar ch'Thane Major 'Shar' suffered from a minor hand injury, to which I attended.
