Watching the display, Sieven frowned. He could see through the high-resolution images the triage teams moving wounded to Reunion Square. Armed personnel flanked them, taking shots at rogue Hunter units that began sniping them. Riveted, he waited until they went behind the marine forces massing in the square. Meters from the line, the incoming mass of Hunters swept in behind them, spraying the avenue with energy pulses. Debris flew from the ground as it was riven with plasma. Though horrible, it served a fortunate purpose to provide the fleeing medical personnel with a smokescreen. The last of the medical team of thirty ran into a tall building adjacent to the Square, and for a moment in the fog of war, there was a ghostly silence. Then, as a host of trumpets sounding the call to charge, the air was filled with the din of two hundred energy weapons being fired simultaneously. It shook the windows in the area and the Hunters screamed for the brief moment they lived. The air and dust sizzled as hot, clear paths twisted through the airborn haze like a hundred rays of golden sun through a storm cloud. Sieven, relieved, smiled as he watched the line of Hunters, visible as infrared silhouettes on the tactical display, fell in waves to the vengeance of the marine line. With a glance and a nod to Ironside across the table, he tapped the console. "Triage, Commander Shiid, from Flag. Make Reunion Square your position. I think the tide has turned once again in our favor." BTC |
