The USS Vanquish finally slid out of sight, falling below the threshold of her quarter’s viewport. For the past few days it had been rotating in and out of view for periods of about 20 minutes – this time Kari Ma’Aru was there to watch its entire trip. It appeared so majestic floating across space, the Xanadu Complex providing an endless backdrop. Kari found herself wondering how her other self could have been so eager to move on. Certainly, there were bigger and better ships out there, but the Defiant II’s size and maneuverability that she found irresistible. Just another one of the differences between herself and the memories that had so suddenly entered her mind. It was altogether a very strange feeling, remembering things that never actually happened; almost like a dream that was far too real for its own good. Thinking about it brought back those memories, and they nearly always clashed violently with reality, so many things were different (…better) about the alternate reality. Oh, for the life of a starship captain, the respect, responsibility, privilege, power, all things Kari had dreamt of. Know that she knew how they felt she wanted them more than ever before. It was cruel, really, to give her that tangible taste of command, only to take it back as soon as it came. She tried to remember how she got there – what actions she made in the other reality that put her in charge. It didn’t come, though; no specific memories anymore, just vague recollections and feelings. All of it was going away at an astonishing rate…maybe if she had tried when the memories had first come. Turning away from the viewport she moved to her desk. Just the same old thoughts, really. She wasn’t going to have any revelations by dwelling on things that could have been. She flipped her computer terminal on and thumbed the LCARS login. It had been a few hours since she had last checked on the status of the fleet. Surely, any number of reports and status updates must have been sent out and they all needed to be collated, prioritized, and summarized into a single source for distribution to anyone who requested it. |
