The featered splatter of white paint grated on Maiko's nerves. A flaw present in the here and in the there, though Maiko's memories were happily fading into the nothingness of a forgotten nightmare. The flaw remained irregardless, the careless stroke of a novice's brush. Aside from the soft white stroke flowing from the back of the ship, the painting was as close to perfect as Maiko could get it to appear. A few blotches here and there had been carefully reworked, and the delicate touch of a dry-painted sponge had given the painting the appearance of hanging amidst the stars, yet single larger dots of light were placed in their proper places. Two ships in orbit around a coppery hazed planet. Two destinies, one planet, one mission. She forced herself to ignore her worries about her parents, convinced that they would have found a way to survive. The disharmony of the single flaw helped to detour her train of thought to other topics. Such as perfection. Maiko reflected as she gazed at the painting, noting that perfection was something that everyone wanted yet few achived. Previously angry at the missed stroke, she now saw the flaw in the painting as being symbolic of being human. So which was more important? Perfection or humanity? Better to take the path to better oneself or to revel in one's little flaws? Maiko took the painting down and carefully draped a cloth over it embroidered with the Starfleet logo. Nervousness almost made her fumble it - after all, she had only really spoken with Lora Kor a few times while onboard. Would it be a suitable gift for one's birthday? Maybe she would pull Savant aside and ask. At any rate, Maiko left her quarters - and her contemplations about perfection in them. Humanity - the celebration of the passing of ages in the presence of crewmates and friends - was the winner for the night. Persuit of perfection would wait until duty tomorrow. |
