After returning to his quarters, Thomas lay back down on his cot attempting to catchup on some sleep. His mind was a jumble of conflicting emotions and images. Images of the grave where Natalia was buried were contrasted with the vivid images of war. He watched as Natalia stood before him still smiling still watching him in that special way that he had come to love. He watched as she started to turn and move towards her fighter. He tried to run after her but his legs were stuck like in quicksand. She disappeared into her fighter and took off. The explosion caused him to wake up as it always did. He sat staring at the picture of her on the side of his cot.

Memories flooded him as he remembered the communique announcing her death and how the emptiness in the pit of his stomach had developed into a hatred for the Pfhor. His anger and rage turning into vengeance. He had driven himself and his crew to no ends in locating and destroying the Pfhor where ever he could find them. Now he had a new enemy and it was worse than the Pfhor. The civilian politicians were attempting to force the military to reduce their size and was releasing thousands of their warriors for civilian life. Suddenly, these men who had sacrificed so much were becoming useless in the military. Wayne felt a sense of bitterness. He reluctantly sat up on his cot and pulled out a PADD.

He began to tap away a message.

To: Admiral H'lrnn
From: LtCol Thomas Wayne

I, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Wayne, do hereby resign my commission as Commanding Officer of the Defender Air Force, Wraith Squadron SO-2, dubbed the Raptor Squadron. It is with great saddness that I hand in my resignation since the Pfhor are still and will always be a threat to the M64 Galaxy and all our allies. We have only established a tenuous grasp in this galaxy and are now in the process of disbanding and/or reducing the only military force able to defend our citizens. Throughout history, whenever man relaxes his vigil, the forces of darkness regroup and reappear. From one warrior to another, the politicians are making a grave error and we all will one day pay a price for this error. A most humble warrior.

Thomas stared hard at the PADD reading each line over and over. He wanted to sign it. He agreed with every word but one - resign. He was a warrior born and bred and nothing else mattered any more. His one true love was gone and his vengeance was not satisfied. His men, their machines were just an extension of himself and his anger. He was going to 'resign' and turn his back on the only people and life that made any sense to him. Was he afraid of peace? The question stared at him and he left it unanswered. Slowly, he touched the PADD and deleted the message.

Standing up, he headed for the transporter. Speaking to the sergeant, he asked to be transported down into the heart of the city. Stepping onto the pad, he watched as the sergeant worked his magic. Ten minutes later, Thomas sat in a bar drinking Reorsan wine and not caring.
