Thomas sat at the helm trying to stay busy and make sure that the Pfhor cruiser was ready to either jump into action or make a quick jump to safety. The other ships had left ten minutes ago and he was stuck on the bridge with Prescott and Ironside. At least the radiation levels had dropped back into the safety levels. As he waited, his mind brought back memories. Memories that he did not want to remember.

Days passed slowly, then weeks. Thomas felt like he was reborn. Flying the Spectres and training the new recruits was just part of the fun. Spending his off-duty hours with Natalia were even better. They would spend six days a week training the recruits, engaging in mock combat, and teaching classes. At nights, they would go out dancing, having quiet romantic dinners, and on their day off, spend it exploring Reor and enjoying its quiet secluded corners.

Thomas smiled as he remembered their island adventure. They had borrowed two Spectres for a shake down cruise and had promised the techs that they would bring them back in one piece. They spent the first hour performing mock air-to-air combat and then the second hour trying to push the Spectres to their limits. Once work was finished, they went island hopping until they found one that was empty. Landing the Spectres on the beach, they spent the day swimming. Later they sat on the sand eating their lunches and chatting about each other, their friends, and their homes. Still later, they kissed and cuddled with each other. As the sun started to settle, it was Natalia that noticed it first. The tide had turned and the Spectres were being pounded by the waves. The two Starfleet officers ran and jumped into their Spectres as the water level continued to rise around them. Luckily, the Spectres were not prone to water damage and they lifted off. Thomas and Natalia returned back to the base and handed the Spectres back to the techs. They had just started walking away when a tech called out. As they turned around, other techs stared at the large fish that the tech had pulled out from the landing struts. Trying not to laugh, Thomas and Natalia made a dash for the exit before someone started asking questions. Later on, they laughed and giggled as they lay in bed staring into each others eyes.

Thomas felt a sudden emptiness as he shook his head trying to dispel the memories and feelings that kept trying to intrude on his work. He hated times like this where all they had to do was wait for something to happen. He needed to bury the past and move forward. Grabbing the tool kit that Ironside had left near his console, Thomas requested permission to make some minor adjustments using the excuse that the controls felt a bit 'loose'. He buried his mind back into the work at hand.
