Thompson shouted over the radio: "The Americans are attempting to flank our position. Hold tight. Keep them under fire." Thompson knew that he had two platoons in the reserve. He decided to call up one. As the lieutenant commanding it arrived, he called the luey to him. "Lieutenant, the Americans are attempting to flank us. We need you to form up on them and hold them in position. Meanwhile, I'm going to try to get some fire on their flanks. We can't let them gain a foothold here. There's no guarantee that we can dislodge them with the reserve Panzer division." Thompson decides to join the Lieutenant. He grabs his Sturmgewher 44 and takes his position behind a dirt mound, overlooking the beachhead and the conquered cement mg 42 and rifle fortifications. The Americans start firing on the platoon and they fire back, inflicting casualties. One German soldier tries to clear his jammed weapon and with a sudden ding, a gaping hole appears in his helmet and falls to the floor, dead. Thompson turns his rifle on the advancing Americans and finds one running at him, shooting. He feels the bullets displacing the air, flying at him. Thompson pulls the trigger, releasing several shots. One of which hits the American. The American slouches back as blood flows freely from a wound. He falls forward, mortally wounded. The American forces are pinned, but their grenade fire and bullets are reducing the platoons strength. Thompson calls on the radio for the remaining platoon to flank the Americans. The resulting question is can his platoon hold on that long. |
