~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Duty LOG Lt Kathleen Hammond~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part I The Biology Lesson LOG TRANSMISSION STARDATE: 240202.10 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- =================================Science Lab 1============================== "Intruder alert!" The klaxons went of screaming in my ears as I ran the experiments on the virus. "Damn, if it isn't on thing it's another." I set the monitor to wcan the corridore outside the la. There they were a pack of hounds. "I thought we left them on Reorsa." My skin crawled. 6the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. This jmeant war. They had taken out my science station on Reorsa this was my home and I had just gotten back in it. I was not about to lose ground again. "Computer, establish a level ten containment field around the entire lab. Do not let anything in or out. Seal the doors Alpha Alpha 117. On my mark!" "Bridge, we have hounds just outside the science lab on deck 9. I'm sealing us in. Notify security if they don't get too busy. We can hold out if nothing breaks through." "Bridge here, we're fighting them all over the ship, your down on the list. We'll free you as soon as we can." I understood the stiff tone in Daren's voice and knew it would be quite some time before anyone would get to us. We were on our ownh...for a long while. Protocol. I didn't want to scare anyone. Most of my team had just come from the academy when they signed onto the ship. "Everyone into the E12 lab and now...forget your experiment. Everything is a wash. We'll duplicate what we can and scratch the rest." Inside the room a young ensign carrying a phaser rifle came up to me. His voice was shaky. "How did they get aboard?" "How they got aboard isn't our concern. How we deal wit it is." "Ma'am, something is in the science lab itself. It's knocking things off the desks, and knocking things over....look at the monitor." I looked at the monitor and sure enough one of the hounds was making its way around the lab. "It can sense us. It knows we're here but it can't find us. It has a powerful sensing unit built into it's eyes. How would you guys like to dissect a hound?" Cheers went up around the room. "Well one of us has to go out there and get it." Gasps went around. "Don't worry. There won't be short straws this time. It goes by job title. As the Chief Science officer, it's my duty to bring home the kill." "You can't go out there." Some one protested. "You want to take my place." "Everyone got quiet." "Thought not. Give me the rifle, and let me have my chance. If I don't make it don't worry there wont be anything to bury they eat their victims whole. Keep this door locked until security comes to get you out." I bypassed all the decontamination procedures. Slipping into the main lab, I stepped behind a table where there were several flasks, one containing muric acid. I clanged the glasses together alerting the hound to my presence in the room. It rose and looked straight at me, sizing me up, I supposed fir a meal. I noticed something. There were joints in the armor plating. If I could just fire up into one of those joints I might hit something tender and vital. I aimed. Someone had opened the door and shouted. The hound turned. I don't know what I hit but the hound fell flat onto the deck. It lay there motionless. "Computer, number of life signs in this side of the room." The computer monotoned, "I am detecting only your life sighs Lieutenant." The Ensign stepped out of the doorway. "Is it dead." He went over and began poking it. "Ensign, stop!" "It's dead. You killed it, ma'am. She killed it everyone!" The others began piling out of the E-12 lab and surrounding the creature. All were staring at it, wide eyed. "Are you all right?" A Lieutenant came over to me. "You look white as a sheet." "I am...fine, Lieutenant Masterson" I wiped sweat from my face. I rubbed my stomach wondering what effect my heart rate was having on the precious life I carried. "Well, guys you have something to study. It's all yours, make the most of it we won't get this chance again...not soon." "Carry it into the lab dissection room. Lieutenant Hammond, I can take charge of the dissection. You look too ill to manage it. Stay here, rest, and monitor it with the scans, ma'am. Guide me with anything you think needs done. I'll follow your guidance." I nodded feeling ill from the stench of the creature as it was being carried past me. ‘Good idea." "All right, listen up...everyone gown up. We're doing this for Hammond!" I heard Masterson's words over the com attached to the monitor as I leaned back in the chair. I felt very ill, but I desperately wanted to watch the dissection of the hound. This time we would be able to see what the anatomy of the being we were up against was. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~END TRANSMISSION~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kathleen Hammond Lieutenant Chief Science Officer USS Coronado |
